This appears to refer to his WW1 service . As an Officer his record would be with TNA :

Wow!  I have been out but you have all been so busy.  You have found so much that I will have to piece it all together but on first looks I am not sure that this is the man I started looking for, but may still be distantly related.
Many thanks for now,
Ainslie

Your finding about 'interpreter/diplomat' has opened up a fascinating life.  I had seen, via Google, references to someone of the same name involved in consular work, but had not linked them to my man.  It is now evident that FBK was a prewar consular officer, and continued this sort of work during W1 and afterwards.  He is mentioned several times in 'Six- The Real James Bonds' by Michael Smith.  Somehow, he served for a time in the Royal Garrison Artillery and was a prisoner of war from April to December 1918, captured in France, but never claimed any medals he might have earned.

Thanks again, all round.
A

As suggested, I contacted the Vancouver library and they have come up with a newspaper announcement of Frank Kirby's death, as well as other images already linked on this thread.
Many thanks for that tip and all the others.

Help Caroline
Welcome to this forum.  I am a rather distant cousin of the Kirby family and will have to look at my main files to state it more exactly.
I will refresh my memory and post here tomorrow.
Sorry for delay in responding.
Ainslie.
