Hello Meredith,
I'm sure there will be some here who will try to help you.
However, you must help us first by offering a good deal more information than you have .

What was  the man's name?
Were there 2 marriages?  Is that what you mean?
Do you know his birthdate?
His parents' names?

What else? ;D

Sue

I'm a new researcher and have descendent that was born to a Michael Kelly and Mary (maiden name looks to be MacIntyre) and young son was born 1874-75, name Walter, possibly a Thomas was also born there but seems to be in Australia by 1975-77 and I'm not sure if they were English or Australian!  I have birth place listed as Seatapoore India and father as 'soldier'
Hope. You ca n help. I can't find arrival on a ship, although a ship from Plymouth arrived in 1878 with a husband , wife and three children so didn't know whether that may have been direction to look

Hi there,    Until 1949, there was no such thing as "Australian" citizenship.   Anyone born in any of the British Colonies was automatically a British Subject, and could move freely between Britain and any part of its realm without any difficulty .... the British Empire was extensive ....   The British Army ceased stationing regiments in the Australian Colonies in the early 1870s.  And the colonies continued raising their own volunteers.

Cheers,  JM
It was not unusual for British soldiers to be found in the colonial regiments.

There are army discharge papers for 6590 Michael Kelly of 19th Brigade RA who married his wife Mary at Peshawar on 10th March 1868. Enlisted at Cardiff in 1861, went to India in 1862, discharged in Bombay in 1883, intended place of residence Sydney, Australia.

On enlistment he said he was aged 21 and from Killeagh, nr Youghal in Co Cork. His medical history however states that he was aged 19 and born at St Mary's Tipperary.

:)  So Michael was aged early 40s when likely migrating to Sydney NSW Australia.

Each of the colonies had their own way of recording incoming passengers.  Some Archives have 'great' records, others are not as good.

New South Wales falls in between Great and not as good.   So here's some links:
http://www.records.nsw.gov.au/state-archives/collection-search  (use the keyword search to find likely Michael KELLY and possible shipping,)

then, armed with ship's name and month/year, use the following link to view images of the passenger list for that voyage

http://www.records.nsw.gov.au/state-archives/guides-and-finding-aids/nrs-lists/nrs-5316

Fingers crossed this helps....

Once you have that detail, please do consider asking for further help on the Australia Board

Cheers,  JM
