Joseph Farmer (Resire?) b 1833-6, Shoreditch,London
« on: Saturday 01 August 15 21:35 BST (UK) »
According to the 1841 census Joseph Farmer was living at 48 Queen Head Walk, Shoreditch, London, aged 8, in the household of James Farmer, 48, Bagmaker, and Ann Farmer, 32. In the 1851 census Joseph is aged 15, Paper Stainer, with father James Farmer, 58, Paper Bag Maker, and mother Ann, 44, along with siblings James, Sarah, Elizabeth, William, Maria and Matilda.

Joseph married Rebecca Brading at St John's Church, Bethnal Green, on 1st August 1859. However, his name is recorded as Joseph Farmer RESIRE, and his father is recorded as James RESIRE. All subsequent census records for Joseph records his name as Joseph Farmer. The surname Resire does not yield much information on the Internet.

I note that there are various baptism records for the other siblings, but none for Joseph. The father in all these is recorded as James Farmer, shoemaker/cordwainer, living at Queens Head Walk/
Hoxton.

I would be most grateful for any help or suggestions as to why this surname Resire would have appeared in the marriage record.

Many thanks.

Was he the oldest?

Could he have been born to Ann before she became Mrs Farmer - what was her maiden name? **

** there is a family tree with James Resire marrying Ann Farmer so maybe her surname dominated for some reason?
Hinchliffe - Huddersfield Wiltshire
Burroughs - Arlingham Glos
Pick - Frocester Glos

No, there was a Jane and a James baptised before Joseph in 1829 and 1831 respectively.

Unfortunately I have not found a Marriage record for James and Ann, and therefore do not know her maiden name.

Birth certificate of one of Joseph's siblings should give Ann's maiden name.

Joseph's baptism is there in 1834 (born 1833) as Josiah FALMER.

So his father was only a paper bag maker on census nights and for the rest of the time he was a cordwainer/shoemaker.  That is a bit odd.  ;D

Resire seems to be such an obscure surname, I wonder if it should be something else, similar.  Perhaps Resier or Riser?

As Chempat has suggested, it looks like the next move should be to buy one of the younger siblings' birth certificate.  For Ann's surname.

It doesn't look as though any of Joseph's siblings used the name Resire on their marriage certificates.  I've seen the marriages for James, Thomas, Maria, William and Matilda (between 1851 - 1870).  All of them give father's occupation as bag maker.  Except Maria and Joseph, who give the occupation as printer.

Hi all, many thanks for your replies.

My next move will be to purchase a birth certificate (probably William's) to determine Ann's maiden name.

It seems likely that Joseph was baptised as Josiah, and it appears that James did change his occupation from shoemaker to paper bag maker/Stainer/printer.

I would be interested to find the family tree with James Resire marrying Ann Farmer.

Many thanks,

Paul

Hi all,

I have purchased the birth certificate of William Farmer (younger brother of Joseph) to determine their mother's maiden name, which turns out to be Ann Farmer formerly SEALE.

Ann is recorded as born 1809, not same county in 1841 census, 1809, Birmingham in 1851 census, and 1811, Shoreditch in the 1861 census.

William was born on 18th May 1844 at 48 Queens Head Walk, Hoxton, Shoreditch, which is the same address that the family were living in the 1841 census. William's father James Farmer is shown as a shoemaker on the birth certificate, although he is recorded as a bag maker in the 1841 census.

Unfortunately, I still cannot find a marriage for the parents James Farmer and Ann Seale, and are no further forward why Joseph Farmer is recorded as Joseph Farmer Resire on his marriage certificate, and father James Resire.

Would very much welcome any further thoughts.

Have you considered whether Joseph was 'adopted' into the family? Is there a connection between Seale or Farmer with Resire?  The other possibility is that Joseph was the result of an affair and James forgave his wife and they kept Joseph as a family member?
