Any advice would be welcome - William Harrison WATT
« on: Sunday 02 August 15 12:51 BST (UK) »
This is a tough one...!!!

I know my Great Grandfather was in the Army during WW1, and that he was gassed in the trenches.

All we have is William Harrison Watt, b. 1881, Airdrie, lived in Glasgow at the time of the war and was married to Mary Bryden Watt.

We have no service number, or regiment....we have a couple of photos from that era that i will put up to see if anyone can suggest if there is any way we can find his service records, (If they exist)

Thanks in anticipation.

John.

If he was serving after 1920, his service records will still be with the MOD.

See: https://www.gov.uk/requests-for-personal-data-and-service-records

For WW1, some 70% of the service records were destroyed in a WW2 bombing raid.

Are there any clues on his death cert?  Scottish certs often have snippets of useful information

Nothing other than the usual stuff, and his profession as a labourer...

Here are some photos of him, any help and advice would be appreciated...

First one we believe he was in the Navy, circa 1900

Second on in the Army, we know nothing about...

Third one is of him in a convalescent home after being gassed...

Would it be better looking a the Navy records....?

Thanks in anticipation..

John.

If the birth dates match this may be your mans naval service record: http://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/details/r/D6761596
