Army pension information
« on: Monday 03 August 15 07:05 BST (UK) »
Hi Folks,

I have been informed by an elder family member that my G/Grandfather was gassed during WW1

We don't know what regiment he served in, or his service number..

My question is....

Would he be entitled to an army pension...?

If so, where could i locate this ?

His death certificate does not give any information on his military service, he died in 1921 as a result of being gassed.

Thanks John.

If you post his name, if possible his date of birth, and the area he lived in, people here may be able to help.

- if you have a photograph of him in uniform, that would help identify his regiment
- if his medals survive, his regiment and service number will be engraved on the edge
- his medal card, easier to find if his name is not very common, will give a limited amount of detail
- the local newspaper may record his enlistment, his being wounded, reference to his army service when he died
- his service papers may survive

All the details we have are:

Name:              William Harrison Watt
Born:               28 th October 1881 in Airdrie, Lanarkshire
Parents:           William Watt & Jane Harrison
Wife:                Mary Bryden
Residence:       Baltic Street or Nuneaton Street in Glasgow

He may have been in the Royal Marines, however never confirmed.

Thanks you very much for your help

John

There is a Royal Navy record on a subscription site for a William Watt born 28 October 1881 Airdrie Lanark joined 7 May 1901 showing service until 1903 (the year is indistinct) which matches the National Archive record found by Crimea1854 on your other thread.  One of his ships was HMS Vivid which matches the cap tally held by the other chap and his trade was stoker which is the sleeve badge he is wearing. He signed up for 12 years but the last date is October 1903.  Doesn't seem to be a reason for the short service given.  I'll try to extract a bit for the experts to look at.

It is with great difficulty I share with you that in the early hours of 07 August 2021, Maximilian passed away unexpectedly but peacefully.

With deep sadness,

Expert eye needed on the last column, does it hint as to why he served until 03 only when he signed up for 12 from 1901 (not on the extract)
