Maternal grandparents
« on: Monday 03 August 15 15:34 BST (UK) »
Hi

My husband has been researching and received lots of help, thought maybe I would try  :)
I would be grateful for any suggestions on tracing my grandma's father.

I have my grandma's birth certificate from 1913 but her father isn't listed.
She was born out of marriage and it was a topic that was not discussed. My grandma unfortunately died before I was old enough to have broached the subject and my mum was only given sketchy details. Basically, we have no information on the father.
My great grandma lived in Ireland but was sent to stay with a family in Sheffield for the pregnancy.  She had my grandma and then returned to Ireland. My grandma was then brought up by the family in Sheffield.
I believe this family in Sheffiled were connected to my great grandma but have been unable to make any connections or find any further  information.

Thank you for any thoughts!

Occasionally the father is named on the baptism records - but not always, but worth a shot

If you give the names and dates that you know (of people who you know have died) then there are fantastic researchers on here who break down many brick walls and may find the connection for you

Ok , that would be fantastic
My grandma was Rhoda Jowett Stimpson born 02/01/1913, died 19/12/1994

Great grandma was Hilda Stimpson who was born 1892 in Sheffield and then later moved to Ireland with her family. She is on the 1911 census in Magherafelt. She died in June 1982

The Jowett in my grandma's name I am told came from the family she lived with in Sheffield but I have found nothing to back this up.

Hi,

Charles Henry Stimson born Sheffield abt 1866 married Sarah Jane Wilkinson  Sept Q 1891 Sheffield.

In 1901 Census they are living Staveley, Derbyshire with the following children:-

Hilda Stimpson          9  Born Sheffield abt 1892
Dorothy Stimpson   7   "      Staveley  abt 1894
May Stimpson          5   "           "         abt 1896.

1891 Census  Brightside Bierlow

There is a Charles H. Stimpson born abt 1865 Sheffield a Railway Porter living as a Boarder with
the Jowett Family:-
John Jowett           33    Painter     born  Belper Derbyshire
Ellen Jowett           31                      "      Sheffield
Cornelious J Jowett   12                      "         "

Just wondered if this was the Jowett connection.

I think you've hit the nail on the head there! well done. There is a child name Cornelius born 1903 to Charles Henry  and Sarah.

Helen (aka "Ellen") Jowett was nee Stim(p)son, a sister of Charles Henry.  She and John William and baby Cornelius* are together with the Stimsons in 1881:

https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:XQN8-WHG

*NB you will see that the surname of Helen, John and Cornelius shows as FORNCETT rather than Jowett, and that seems a fair reading of the enumerator's summary schedule. It could just be that this was the best the enumerator could make out from the household schedule, which of course we cannot see for ourselves.
