8 Westgate Street

Hi all,

Please move if not in the right place! At the time of the 1871 census, my ancestors lived at 8 Westgate Street, Southampton. Much of the original street is gone, it's now a more open space, and the current number 8 is seen below. I think possibly it's the smaller door to the left?



Anyway, I'd like to know whether number 8 kept its place since the 1870s, or whether the current number 8 is a new number 8. If you see what I mean.

I wonder if number 8 has always been number 8, or if my ancestors' number 8 was on the left.

Did they have street maps with house numbers on back in the 1870s? If so, does anybody know where I could access these? I notice some sites offer old maps but at a cost. I'd be interested to know if my ancestors lived in one of the remaining buildings. I don't know where to start!

Hi Spendlove,

Thank you for the link. I notice another picture on there from 1900 says 'No.8 Westgate Street, now a listed building, is on the right'... It's not clear whether this reference is purely from the modern number 8. Wonder if there's anyone on there I can ask.

I had a look at the pics spendlove suggested & the way it's written is a wee bit confusing.

This pic taken "Westgate from the east" (seems a square of short narrow streets was known as Westgate)..........
"Showing the bottom of Westgate Street  and the junction with West gate Terrace" (in your pic)

Hi Annie,

The Westgate is the tower, Henry V marched his troops through there on the way to get the boat to Agincourt, so the place has some history!!

Thanks for the link on 9 West Street, The Masters clan were still there in 1881, I wonder if they knew them 

It's nice to walk around that part of the city, Westgate St joins Bugle St where you have an old pub dating back to the 1200s, you also have Jane Austen's old house nearby. All around that area are really old buildings and the old town walls. The area is steeped in history... But like you say there are some proper ugly modern buildings there too which is a right shame!

I should have read the history............was more interested in clarifying it was the same place 

Yes, re the modern eyesores......you wonder who would give planning permission for such hideous things so remote from what has been saved & you are lucky enough to savour 

I smiled myself when I found the family at no. 9 & wondered too if they knew each other

Southampton city planners..... Now there's an entirely different debate! Mind you, the Luftwaffe Demolition Company didn't help in the 1940s. I do think we're incredibly lucky in Southampton to still have what we do have though.

I wouldn't be surprised if they did know eachother. It's nice to find things like that, so thank you!

It's amazing what we can sometimes find if we dig 

Only yesterday I was researching something for someone & discovered I had a few notes on the person................through info. I've collated over the years from my own family finds (Scottish records which have 3 enties on deaths/ births on each download & 2 entries per marriage download).

I discovered the man had been a guest at a Hotel in Inverness-shire so I looked it up (just my interest as you do)............

Anyway, the hotel has a quest book dating back to late 1800's so I emailed them re the man in question. I got a lovely email back to say the dates they have were from 1890 but my man was there in 1871 but J M Barry had also been a guest there at some time 

I found it all quite interesting & not even my own family
