Same info. Samuel Jnr. died in 1903 aged 85 leaving Annie J as the relict.
They didn't have any surviving children so I wonder if his other children were mentioned in his will.
By 1901 Samuel & Annie were living apart. He in York & she living with her sister in Somerset.
He only left 405 which isn't much for someone in business particularly when his father died in 1871 leaving 90,000.

Suspect that the Samuel Pearson in question was actually the son of the one identified by Ladyhawk - the elder had died by the time that the eldest Wardle was conceived in 1878ish.

Samuel Pearson jnr was born in 1827.  He took over Buglawton Hall when his father died.

Spidermonkey you are correct in that they had a son named Samuel

Their children appear to have been christened Astbury Cheshire

Welcome to Rootschat.

The golden rule is to start with what you know. So start with your grandfather - can you give us his full name, date of birth and where he was born. Then hopefully we can find the family in a census and that should give us his mother's first name.

There is this family in the 1891 census - could that be them?

RG12; Piece: 2817; Folio: 98; Page: 11

Martha Wardle   42   single   charwoman
Harry Wardle   12  son
William Wardle    9  son
Eliza Wardle    6  daughter
Eliza Wardle   73  mother widow

Thank you so much, I have spent the whole day ( virtually ) and came up with the same info and have also found them in the census of 1881. That is definitely my family, I remember both Aunt Eliza and Uncle Harry ( we loved him visiting as he gave us half a crown each ) !! I appreciate all your help, Polly

- Have you managed to see the baptism records of any/all of the reputed children who were born of the owner of Buglawton Hall? As an earlier reply suggested, often there are little "asides" with the original register entries that may give a clue if it was fact, likely, or just a family legend. Most certainly it sounds from all this as if the poor family didn't get any of the family money!
Threlfall (Southport), Isherwood (lancs & Canada), Newbould + Topliss(Derby), Keating & Cummins (Ireland + lancs), Fisher, Strong& Casson (all Cumberland) & Downie & Bowie, Linlithgow area Scotland . Also interested in Leigh& Burrows,(Lancashire) Griffiths (Shropshire & lancs), Leaver (Lancs/Yorks) & Anderson(Cumberland and very elusive)

I also think getting a copy of Samuels will would be worth getting, just in case he acknowledges the children in it.

Perhaps the upkeep of Buglawton Hall just ate into it.
