Wardle - Congleton Cheshire
« on: Tuesday 04 August 15 08:46 BST (UK) »
Just joined, I am looking for the Christian name of my maternal great grandmother. Her surname was Wardle and she lived in Congleton Cheshire and worked in the silk mill owned by Samuel Pearson some time around the early 1800s she had three children, William ( my grandfather ) Harry, and Eliza. I don't know where to start, any tips? My grand father told the family a dark secret, that both he and both siblings were born out of wedlock and the father was Samuel Pearson of Buglawton Hall. Apparently all children used to visit the hall frequently and that Samuel Pearson had been very good to the family !!! Any help or leads would be great. Thanks Polly

Hi Pollywardle - welcome to Rootschat!

Have you found your grandfather and his siblings' baptisms?  That should give your gt grandmother's name.  If you manage to get sight of the original baptism record you might get lucky - some vicars/ministers wrote down the name of the reputed father on baptisms of illegitimate children.

Do you know when your grandfather was born?

Welcome to Rootschat.

The golden rule is to start with what you know. So start with your grandfather - can you give us his full name, date of birth and where he was born. Then hopefully we can find the family in a census and that should give us his mother's first name.

There is this family in the 1891 census - could that be them?

Suspect that the Samuel Pearson in question was actually the son of the one identified by Ladyhawk - the elder had died by the time that the eldest Wardle was conceived in 1878ish.

Samuel Pearson jnr was born in 1827.  He took over Buglawton Hall when his father died.
