Common Local Surnames
« on: Thursday 06 August 15 20:20 BST (UK) »
Hello I'm new here and trying to research my family tree,

I'm from Nottingham and my maiden name is Wheat and according to my local library it's a very common last name

How do i know that the "Wheat's" i am searching for belong to my set of Wheat's? I know they could all be connected but at the moment I'm not interested in aunts, uncles and cousins just the main Grandparents line.

any help would be appreciated

Thanks
 :)

Slowly, step by step working backwards from what you know

You know your name, your parents names, probably your grandparents names

So you work backwards -- birth certificates give mother's maiden names
use that info to find the marriage certificate  - which will give the father's name

then once you are far enough back for someone to be alive in 1911, you start checking censuses to find the family for more info on ages, place of birth, parents etc

Pre-1837, you will have to use Parish registers rather than BMD certificates

And whenever you get stuck -- ask here on Rootschat for help!
Wainwright - Yorkshire
Whitney - Herefordshire
Watson -  Northamptonshire
Trant - Yorkshire
Helps - all
Needham - Derbyshire
Waterhouse - Derbyshire
Northing - all

I'm from Nottingham too, and I've never come across the surname Wheat!  According to www.britishsurnames.co.uk it is a rare surname, but yes, with it's highest frequency in Nottinghamshire, particularly north Notts.  Now if you want common Ward, Clarke ….

Good luck
Derbys: Ward, Hopkinson, Bradley, Birds, Clarke, Taylor, Daykin, Gent, Vardy, Cotterill, Stocks, Godber, Dronfield, Charlesworth, Bonsall, Purseglove
Notts: Clarke, Freeman, Kitchen, Allcock, Housley, Swanwick, Berrisford, Farnsworth, Antcliffe
Staffs: Nutt, Bowring
Yorks: Holling, Fish, Kay, Hardy
Lincs: Plummer, Broughton, Wellbourne

Come over to the Notts board if you have some specific queries re your Wheats! I've just looked on my Notts FHS CD and there are 256 Wheat baptism listed in the county between 1800 and 1900. Now that's a fair amount to sift through on your own, but not all that many in the overall scheme of things so it might not be too difficult to untangle them.
Bradbury (Sedgeley, Bilston, Warrington)
Cooper (Sedgeley, Bilston)
Kilner/Kilmer (Leic, Notts)
Greenfield (Liverpool)
Holyland (Anywhere and everywhere, also Holiland Holliland Hollyland)
Pryce/Price (Welshpool, Liverpool)
Rawson (Leicester)
Upton (Desford, Leics)
Partrick (Vera and George, Leicester)
Marshall (Westmorland, Cheshire/Leicester)
