Skinners in Woodbury Salterton
« on: Sunday 09 August 15 01:59 BST (UK) »
I'm looking for any information on John Skinner 1811-1889. I have some but can't find where he is buried in Woodbury Salterton. He was the sexton of the Woodbury Salterton Church . I'm visiting in the spring of 2016 and would like to visit his gravesite if possible.
Many thanks
Janet Skinner

This site says he died 1884... There is a death 1884 for a Skinner, John age 81 / St. Thomas district  / vol. 5b p.41 so you may want to confirm you have the right generation, or have the reference to the publication corrected.

Hi,

I have found this about the John SKINNER who died in 1888.

Found at FindMyPast where the following is my transcription from the image available,

Burials in the Church of Holy Trinity in the Parish of Woodbury Salterton, in the County of Devon, in the year 1888-89-90

John SKINNER
Abode:  Woodbury Salterton
When buried:  Dec 31
Age:  78 yrs
Ceremony Performed by:  H Powell Alford / Vicar

This Church seems to have a Facebook page, maybe you could post a message there to see if anyone can find more info for you.

https://www.facebook.com/HolyTrinityWoodburySalterton

Also in a list of deaths in the "Western Times 04 January 1889"

SKINNER - Dec 25, at Woodbury Salterton, Mr John SKINNER aged 78.

This could be the John SKINNER that died in 1884 as Broad Clyst was in St Thomas registration district, it does say that he died at his daughter's house in Exeter, but there is no Exeter death reg. for a John SKINNER in 1884.

Exeter and Plymouth Gazette Daily Telegrams 02 April 1884

SKINNER - March 30, at 13 Regent-street, St Thomas, Exeter, residence of his daughter. John SKINNER of Broadclist aged 82.

Unfortunately neither mentions him being a sexton.

Regards,
Daisy

Gazetteer and Directory of the County of Devon 1879 https://books.google.ca/books?id=n9sWAQAAIAAJ&pg=PA857
Sninner Jno, Shopkeeper, Marine Store dealer & Sexton Woodbury Salterton
John Grocer & coal dealer

So yes, 1881 shows the one born 1811 is the correct one
John M. / occ.Grocer Village  born 1841 Woodbury on 1881 census  https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:X3KW-VJ2
John b. 1811 Lympstone, Devon    occ. Marine Store Dealer Salterton Village Englandhttps://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:X3KW-2S7

So... it may boil down to... Daisypetal might be a much better transcriber  ;D
