Hansen-Jakobsen Marriage - Germany or Denmark
« on: Tuesday 11 August 15 14:39 BST (UK) »
My great-great-grandparents, Karsten Friedrich Hansen c. 1810 and Helene Margareth Jakobsen married circa 1840.  From what I have found so far, he was born and died in Schweinhusen, Schleswig-Holstein (sp?) and she was born c. 1812 maybe in Denmark.  It has been suggested that they married in "Dirthmarschen, Schlessig-Holstein, Tyskland".   I can find no birth/marriage/death records for either of them.  Just maybe's.  Can someone kindly point me in the right direction, and is there anyone I can contact who can interpret German records if I find any?  They had a son, Johannes Andreas Hansen, b. 1841 in Schweinhusen, and died in 1892 in Brisbane, Australia.  He is my great-grandfather.  Any help will be greatly appreciated.

There's some history of the province here:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Schleswig-Holstein

Essentially, during history, it has been Danish, Prussian and German at different times!

The First Schleswig War lasted from 1848 until 1851.
The Second Schleswig War was fought in 1864.

Dirthmarschen is a district in present-day Germany, containing the cities of Hamburg and Kiel.
It was in Denmark until 1864; in Germany until 1866; and then in Prussia.

So, for records up to 1864, I would have thought Denmark was the best place to look?
Sorry I can't be more helpful!

Hi robang66

You can try this site: http://www.danishfamilysearch.com/amt23/

There are quite a lot of records there but not all records unfortunately. All the parishes are listed.
Worth a try maybe.

Morning, Ian:   I did print out the map of Slesvig-Holsten County, but the only names I have on my papers is Schwienhusen, and Schleswig-Holstein.  Am I looking for an area in Germany or Denmark?  I found nothing under the names I have, and I'm totally confused with "County".  County where?  Which area, which country?  As you can tell, geography is not my main suit.  Thanks!  Robyn

Hi
Dirthmarschen is a hundred in the county.
Schwienhusen on the other hand I have not been able to find but do know that it is in the county of Schleswig-Holstein.

The county of Schleswig-Holstein was once Danish so you need to look at the records for Denmark.

Hope this helps.

Dirthmarschen is a district in present-day Germany, containing the cities of Hamburg and Kiel.

You must be using a different map as from what I can see neither Kiel nor Hamburg are near Ditmarschen  ???

I'm actually using that map and website a lot at the moment  :)

It was KGarrad's comment about Hamburg & Kiel being in Dirthmarschen I posted about.
