I'm actually using that map and website a lot at the moment 

It was KGarrad's comment about Hamburg & Kiel being in Dirthmarschen I posted about.

Where it says:
Important towns are Hamburg and Itzehoe to the south, Husum to the north, and Kiel and Rendsburg to the east. The main roads and rail lines in Schleswig-Holstein follow a north-south direction, making Hamburg its most accessible city.

Maybe my misinterpretation?

Nowehere in the Wikipedia article does it say that Hamburg, Kiel, etc. are actually in Dirthmarschen and is you look at a map showing Ditmarschen it looks fairly obvious where the boundaries are.

I read that as meaning that towns were in the district!

Which is obviously your mistake- the article was just mentioning the largest nearby towns, transport links, etc.
