Grandfather
« on: Wednesday 12 August 15 13:10 BST (UK) »
My grandfather was Fred Whittle, from Kent, England.  He was based in Ireland in 1922 possibly in Black and Tans or RIC Auxiliaries as their title was.  They were recruited from ex service men in England to assist in the Civil unrest in 1921 - 1924.

Welcome to rootschat, Vawall.

Have you got a specific query about your grandfather, possibly related to his time in Ireland?

Hi,  well anything at all really.  All I know is he was a drummer possibly in military.  He was from Kent, England. He was sent to Newry in Co. Down in 1921/22 to assist RIC during War of Independence.  My mother was born in 1923 and he visited my grandmother up until 1925 to bring her to England but her father would not let her go.  My grandmother was about 30 then so I presume he was similar age.  I saw a photograph of him when I was young girl but of course didn't take much notice and it has been long lost.  My grandmother and my mother are both dead now obviously and I tried very hard before my mother died 2 years ago to find out about him but to no avail.

Thank you very much.  I will check these out re military service with Ancestry.  Hopefully something will turn up that will ring a bell.   I would be fairly certain he was in WW1 so  I will start there.

Thank again, much appreciated .

Hi,yes my husband and I were over in London and we had afternoon at National Archives.  I could have spent a week in it!  I saw the RIC register but nothing on it.  There was a George Whittle but so far haven't come across any Frederick George in my ancestry search.  I did notice there are more articles for RIC there now.  There is a register of final payments to the men and also a record of mess bills.  Unfortunately it is an expensive trip.  I might drop them a line actually and ask about it.  Thank you anyway.  Very much appreciated.
