Laundry Home
« on: Wednesday 12 August 15 16:21 BST (UK) »
Hi,  My great grandmother is Emily Efford, born approx 1887 in Portsmouth.  She married Joseph Walden, born 1881, in 1904.  I can't find either of them, or their 3 children (Emily Louisa Walden, Joseph Henry Walden, and George Henry Walden) in 1911 census records other than Emily Efford appears in 1911 as 'single' in St Anne's Laundry Home, Trout Road, Yiewsley, Middlesex.

My grandfather, George Henry Walden, was born in 1910.

I have a few queries;

1) if this is my Emily, who is married, why would she be listed as single
2) why would she be in a laundry home
3) where have her family disappeared to?!
4) where can I find records relating to this home

If anyone can shine any light, or can see that I'm missing something obvious, please know I would be most grateful!

Joseph was working as a labourer in the 1901 census, and on George Henry Walden's marriage certificate in 1942, he is alive and working as a labourer at HM Dockyard, Portsmouth.

Thanks, I had wondered whether he was in the navy and away from home.  :)

Hi,

Have you tried looking at the grandparents to see if they are living with them?

I presume this is Joseph on the 1901?

St Anne's Laundry Home, Trout Road, Yiewsley
It was for girls morally weak and unfit for service. There were 22 places and it was for over 16's

Well, JJen, how stoopid do I feel now!  I thought I had checked all the relatives, but seem to have missed that they are indeed living with the Shipps (yes that is Joseph in 1901) in 1911.   ::) :o

So, it would appear that the Laundry Home Emily isn't my one after all!

Thank you all, and let this be a lesson to me to check my facts PROPERLY before posting!  Sorry, and thank you!  :D
