Frederick Pickering & his spouse Mary Ann
« on: Wednesday 12 August 15 17:44 BST (UK) »
Hi,

I'm trying to find out when someone got married and their maiden name. The usual channels have dried up or I'm missing it!

Frederick Pickering was born in 1880 in Rochdale and died 1st Feb 1964. His spouse was Mary Ann/Annie and she was born circa 1882 and died 24th March 1975. The UK Wills & Probate site gives the same address (in Blackpool) for both when probate was given. Frederick left all his estate to Mary Ann.

They are not brother & sister; Mary Ann does not appear on any census for the family.

Frederick was in the 1911 census living at home in Rochdale and was 31 and unmarried. He had been in the Medical Staff Corps from 1897 - 1902 but was discharged because of ill health.

Can any one help?

Do the beneficiaries of Mary Ann's estate give any clues.  Are the executors of Fredericks estate family or solicitors

Hi,

The probate details are off the UK Wills & Probate site, https://probatesearch.service.gov.uk/.

Frederick's says 'probate Lancaster 25 February to Mary Ann widow'.

Mary Ann's says 'probate Liverpool 5 June'.

So no clues there!

Hi

They could have married abroad while in Medical Staff Corps.

You might have to get the will to see if you can find any other relatives, (I would go for the last one).

Frederick left all his estate to Mary Ann.

He could have left money to other people then, Mary Ann is mentioned on the probate index but it only means that probate was applied for by her ;)

I think if all else fails I would be getting Mary Ann's will.

Hi Maggie

Based upon your statement that in the 1911 census he was unmarried I have just run a search on Free BMD and got several hits but not from within your specified area.
If you search on Frederick Pickring and a Mary 1911 onwards and all counties = no results, put the e back in and there are 15 between 1911 and 1952.
Run the search again using his name  and also Mary Ann or Mary Anne = no results.

It is as you will know I am sure, quite possible he married away from his hometown, so if you replicate what I did then perhaps one of those 15 may be yours?

I so hope this helps in a small way

Maggie

I just ran the search again using Frederick etc and for wife I put Mary A in and this came up

Marriages Mar 1918   (>99%)
Pickering    Frederick    McAndrew    Ecclesall B.    9c   516

and her name was Mary A, Eccleshall B is actually Eccleshall Bierlow on the boarder of Derbyshire and Yorkshire - not millions of miles from Lancs?

and there are more so it might be an idea to explore this further? Either way I feel an expense coming your way for some certificates to prove disprove your search by way of elimination?

Hi,

Thanks for your responses and research. Been away for a couple of days but now I'll replicate your searches and see what I get.

Thanks again.
