Fred Gurman
« on: Thursday 13 August 15 10:30 BST (UK) »
Hello,
My Great Grandfather was called Fredrick Gurman. His death was registered in 1970 in Northampton. He married Mabel Gibbons in 1924 in Northampton and they had at least 2 daughters (one being my Nan). My nan believes her father grew up Southampton/Portsmouth way. This lead me to find a Fred Gurman born to a Selina Gurman on the 1891 census. Fred Gurman born on 7th November 1887 which also matches the birthday that my Nan remembers. My Nan also remembers an Auntie Elizabeth and Uncle Alfred. These match the siblings, although she has no recollection of the other siblings. I have been able to trace the Gurman family back and used a previous thread on this board to help me unravel the mystery. Selina King married a Noah Gurman in 1866. By the 1871 census she was living with Joseph King, 76 and Joseph King, 41 with two daughters Mary Elizabeth Gurman, 4 and Francis Gurman, 5 months. Another search shows that in the 1861 census a Selener? King was living with the same Joseph's stating he was her Granddaughter. Noah Gurman seems to vanish. He is not on the 1971 or any future census. By 1981 Selina Gurman states she is the head of the household (Widow) but has had two further children, William and Alfred. She also has two lodgers, George French and Thomas French. In the 1891 census the two daughters have left home but she has four sons living with her, William, George, Alfred and Fred. Fred who I believe to be my Great Grandfather. One of the lodgers (Thomas French) has left, and according to some newspaper articles, in a less than amicable manor and George French remains. In 1892 Selina Passes away with a death registered in her name.

By 1901 I cannot find Fred Gurman (in either the 1901 or 1911 census). He then reappears for his marriage in Northampton to Mabel Gibbons in 1924. I would be very greatful if anyone could help me with where to look for Fred Gurman during this time or help me locate his siblings.

I believe George Gurman may have joined the navy as I found a George Gurman in the 1901 census in the Portsmouth Navy aged 19. I have also found a possible death for George Gurman Aged 64 in Colchester Essex and a birth registered in 1881 as George Richard Gurman.

Any further information, help or collaboration with any of this information would be greatly appreciated as I am new to all of this! And the big question is what happened to Fred after his mother died? Thanks for reading, Sophie

(I'm not sure if I have posted this in the right place, I chose the board because I only started researching yesterday and wasn't sure how to ask a moderator, feel free to move if you feel there is a more suitable location)

This is all fascinating. I believe you are right about Salena's parents and Joseph being perhaps Grandparents. I need to locate Henry King and correct this on the family tree.

I am very interested in what happened to Fred Gurman after his mother died. He is on 1891 census but I can not find him after this until the marriage to Mabel Gibbons in the 1920s. Any ideas where to search?

Fred's brother (George), his birth certificate shows a George Gurman as the father. I can't find him anywhere. Which has lead me to speculate that George French (The lodger) might be the father of Fred, George and Albert. Albert has been baptised Albert French Gurman.

On the census in 1871 it states that Selina Gurman is the daughter in law to the head of house - Joseph King (Bn 1795) Although with this as her maiden name, I am not sure of it's accuracy.

There are WW1 Army records for a Frederick Gurman.  Have you looked at those?

Hi,
No I had not seen the WW1 military records in Frederick Gurman's name. After a search this looks like it could be him because it he is in the Hampshire Regiment. I can't find a birthdate for him to confirm though. Will look and see if there is another Frederick Guman in Hampshire at the same time.
Really exciting find, thanks again!

The only other Frederick Gurman's in Hampshire at the time are either to young to enlist (Born 1897 and 1907). I really believe this could be the Fred Gurman i'm searching for. Thanks again.
