How to look at records for a workhouse
« on: Thursday 13 August 15 15:55 BST (UK) »
Hi,
Does anyone know how to look up the people who lived in the workhouse in Southampton between 1892 and 1910? Could this be the likely destination of an 3 year old Orphan?
Thanks

Hi!

Have you tried the 1901 census?
Keane (Westmeath)
Ledwith (Longford/Westmeath)
Gray (Sligo)
Eustace (Louth)
Frost (Suffolk)
Farrar (Yorkshire)
La Favor/Lefebvre (Quebec)
Mineard/Maynard/Mainard/ Maynord (Wiltshire/Monmouthshire)

Southampton Archives Service appear to hold the records for Southampton Workhouse.  You may need to contact them to confirm exactly what they do hold.

I don't have any experience of your second question, but it could very well be the destination of a 3 year old orphan, assuming that no family members were able or willing to look after the child.
Transcriptions and NBI are merely finding aids.  They are NOT a substitute for original record entries.
Remember - "They'll be found when they want to be found" !!!
If you don't ask the question, you won't get an answer.

There is a section on children in the Workhouse at http://www.workhouses.org.uk/education/

Thanks - I have emailed Southampton Archive services. The child in question does not appear on the 1901 census or the 1911 census but reappears when he marries in 1924. Name: Fred Gurman. I am hoping he turns up in the local orphanage so fingers crossed that the Southampton Archive has some answers!
