Welcome to Rootschat!   ;D  ;D   ;D

John & Caroline's first child appears to have been baptised in Stithians 23 March 1828

Do you have a birth cert for any of the children born after civil registration to confirm mother's maiden name?
Caroline Hellings dec qtr 1846 Redruth vol 9 pg 248

thank you osprey!  :) new to all of this, it's a bit scary as i have no idea and appear to be bumbling in the dark!!!

no, I don't have any certificates to state mums maiden name; they were married pre-1837, it's mothers maiden name i was hoping to find, if i could locate the marriage.

Family search have children baptised to a john and caroline at both st.gluvias and stithians but i am not sure if this is the same couple.  I can trace one of their children from St gluvias but i don't have the birth cert.

thanks again, abbyvee

well, I think you may need to order a birth cert to get the maiden name. If you a jump a stage, you may end up following the wrong family.
Which child are you descended from? I've given you the birth registration for Caroline with the reference needed. You can order a copy using this link

https://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates/

Birth for Nicholas
Nicholas Thomas Hellings sept qtr 1843 Redruth vol 9 pg 249.

The opc database is usually your best bet for Cornwall. Not complete, the transcription is a work in progress

http://www.cornwall-opc-database.org/search-database/person-search/

Caroline is on the 1841 census as Catherine. 1851 has the family in Stithians with father John & children born Stithians, Caroline born Perran. 1861 Caroline's place of birth is Perranwell which is in the parish of Perranarworthal.
The opc database has a baptism in Perranarworthal for a Caroline Trebilcock bp 5 mar 1804 daughter of Nicholas & Eleanor and there's a John Hellings marriage in St Gluvias 4 Dec 1822 to Elizabeth Trebilcock. This couple have 2 sons baptised in St Gluvias
John Trebilcock Hellings bp 30 march 1823
Nicholas Thomas Hellings bp 7 Jan 1827 buried 21 Jan 1827
Caroline Trebilcock had an older sister Elizabeth, so if John did marry both sisters, the second marriage was not legal.
