I can't find the marriage of Louisa to William or a death for her as yet.  If all the children in 1911 were Ella's I wonder why they didn't marry till 1914.

It is indeed, would be interesting to find out say who the oldest child belonged to but not for me to pry!

I wonder if Ella's birth was registered under her father's surname and that's why we can't find her.
Or maybe her names were switched round Louisa Ella or even Ella was a nickname like for Isabella.

I'm wondering if her mother Louisa didn't actually marry William Knight and so didn't die until after her daughter married.

I wonder too who the relatives are she is with in 1891 age 13 in Kensington.

Hi,

I wonder if the following might be mother Louisa Newbury's 1st marriage perhaps? On freeBMD:

Newbury, Louisa; September qtr 1881; Newton A (Newton Abbot) registration district; Volume 5b Page 288

Possible grooms:

Nicholson, Francis Reginald
Wilson, Thomas

Newton Abbot is the registration district for Teignmouth.

Hope this helps.

Kind regards

That's interesting, I hadn't thought about her mother being married before.  Still can't find a marriage to William Knight though.

If she was using the name Knight there is a death in Kettering that fits age wise but not till 1925.

Newton Abbot is the registration district for Teignmouth.

This seems the likely groom as, in the 1901 census, Ella L Newbury, 24, b Teignmouth and William Wilson, 19, b Teignmouth were both listed as stepchildren to William S Knight. (William's birth was registered in Jul 1882 Newton Abbot). I can't find much evidence for a Thomas Wilson in the right area in 1881: there's one in the army in Exeter and (a more likely) one in Dartmoor prison!

Do we know where William Wilson and Louisa Newbury were in 1891? It is probably a red herring but there is an entry for a Louisa Gensler, 38, b Teignmouth, married to a German waiter called Albert Gensler (they had a visitor from Teighnmouth: Ellan Hall). In 1901 Albert is single.

In 1911 William Knight and Ella claim to have been married for eleven years which is clearly wrong.

My guess is that Louisa married Thomas Wilson, and then William Knight didn't marry either Louisa or Ella.

I didn't get very far with he Pugsleys. In 1854 William Pugsley, 21, joiner, s William P, gardener, married Louisa Howard, 25, d William H, gardener. Both father Williams were married to Marys, but I can't see any obvious connection yet.

It's fascinating this one isn't it.  Will take a bit of sorting out.

William S Knight married Ella Louisa in 1914.

I can't see the Pugsley connection yet either.

Will recheck the census for Louisa as can't explain why she is down as wife of William Knight in 1901 unless that was a mistake ???
