George ACKROYD - P.O.W. Japanese 1942 Singapore

Hi Everyone,

Is there anyone who may have a connection/knowledge of the above gentleman?

I believe he was in the Argyll & Southern Highlanders and captured at the fall of Singapore and was a POW until 1945.

Believe he came from Leeds area.

No connection with him myself but I have a photo of George which someone may like to have.

I'm not sure if this is the same George Ackroyd as he has the middle name of Harry but his home address was Leeds as per the Liberation Questionnaire from COFEPOW.

Thanks for posting the web link which may help someone now or in the future.

As I said in my post I know nothing really about George Ackroyd.

I have found a couple of gents on " Ancestry" who could be the one so I have sent emails to the tree owners. Will let you know if I have any success.

Thanks for that Giblet. Went on that site last night and saw the photo posted by his grandson but the email and phone no. for him are old and no longer available but have sent an email to the chap who seems to be running things now.

Hope to get a response as comparing the two photos they look like the same person.

Am also going to email the other site that Maddie gave me and see if they can help.

Not going to give up on this one - if all else fails will contact the MOD as his grandson seems to be a serving soldier.

Don't know why I didn't chuck that photo out when clearing mum's house 5 years ago but came across it yesterday when I was looking through some other stuff. By the way no romantic link with my mum she went out with his pal a Canadian.

Maybe you were just meant to keep it so it can find its way home and your the person to do it.

George's grandson who was looking for info is/was in the REME and I have just found a facebook page for this.

I have never been on facebook but took the plunge registered and posted on this site (think more than once, but never mind ). So with any luck may get contact with said grandson.

Who says you can't teach an old dog (female version) new tricks.

Will keep you updated.
