RootsChat "Possibly Similar Topics"
« on: Wednesday 19 August 15 14:18 BST (UK) »
Today I have noticed an addition to each page of each topic on RootsChat. Appearing beneath each thread is a list of 7 "Possibly Similar Topics".

It makes each page a lot longer to scroll down and I'm not sure how useful having supposed 'similar topics' would be especially at the bottom of a thread you are already reading.

Is this a permanent feature, a mistake, or an experiment? I'm not convinced of the value of this.

OK. I shall rephrase that. After the final post of the thread you need to scroll down further down the page if you wish to return to the top of the page using the "TOP" tab.

I hadn't noticed it till you mentioned it - normally I scroll down as far as the line with
Pages: [1] (or more) on the left and buttons for Reply/Notify/Mark Unread/Print on the right, and the breadcrumb underneath, so I was completely unaware of this list below the Quick Reply box.

So it doesn't bother me much whether it's there or not. I can imagine it might sometimes be useful, though as the ones immediately below the Quick Reply box I'm typing in include threads about a RootsChat meet in 2006, it might need a bit of tweaking...  ;D

Yes Arthur, the "Possibly Similar Topics" are not particularly useful are they?  :)

I was just interested to find out what the reasoning behind the addition is. I use the TOP tab all the time and this list adds to my scrolling time ( ;D ;)) and just seems a bit odd stuck there.

I didn't notice it ( although I  really don't notice adverts either, my brain tends to block out certain things - I'm an advertisers worst nightmare). As said it's at the bottom of the page after reply buttons and next buttons, so I can't see how it would take longer to scroll down unless you want to scroll past the next page button or reply button.

it seems they are dud hits anyway, for instance this thread is supposedly similar to a meet in Swansea , a meet in Manchester and speed access in Aus and New Zealand ( looks almost  as good as Ancestry's  hints!  ;D)

Kind Regards :)

We do try things from time to time. We've had it on before.

The results of Similar Posts can sometimes be useful, it all depends on the subject matter. Other times the results are pretty useless though too :) If it occasionally helps people now and again find a post then I'm quite happy.

It's not for everyone, but as it's after a post so it shouldn't really be much of a bother.

Hi Trystan. You moved my topic. Thank you - I wasn't sure where to post it.

Can you answer my question?  ;) Why do we now have "Possibly Similar Topics"?

And, you have answered it. I thought it might be you fiddling around experimenting.  ;)
