ELLAN DAMS
« on: Wednesday 19 August 15 18:05 BST (UK) »
Does anyone know if records are in existence giving details of the workers on the Ellan Dam Wales.  I believe there was a workers village and maybe information may have survived on residents.  Trying to trace my grandfather who was a navvy on this site.  Many thanks.

Suzards link also include the visitor centre, I know there is some archive material on display there, maybe an email to the contact will help.

The village workers would be included in the 1901 census.

The work also included a 73 mile long pipeline to Birmingham which needed a huge number of workers who would not be in the village.

Some records are at Powys archives, others at Birmingham City, I cannot see that any have been digitised or are searchable, so an individual among several thousand may be hard to find, but the wealth of material online makes interesting reading.

This site has pictures of the village, also tells us the school daily log book has been
destroyed.

Thank you Mazi, appreciate the leads and I will definitely contact the visitor centre.
By 1901 my gfather had moved on to Yorkshire to work on the Derwent Dam (I found him living in the workers village there on the 1901 census).
I am trying to discover his origins, which seems to be Glamorgan, but cannot find any paperwork detailing his parents and hoped that employment records from Elan may include them as his next of kin.
He never married so there is no marriage certificate I can refer to.  Do you know of any other records which may give his parents names?
Thanks again.

Other rootschatters with much more knowledge than I have given their thoughts, maybe if you look again at the name change in 1911 and put the details on your post " help in reading census" on the glamorganshire board that post may progress further.

It would be really helpful to stick with one post to save duplication of effort

Good luck
Mike
