Sir Alexander Lees Mayall
« on: Friday 21 August 15 08:40 BST (UK) »
I am trying to find a photo of this man -  distant relative.    Also known as Sir Lees Mayall.
His second marriage was to Mary Hermione Ormsby-Gore.

He was a famous diplomat and there is lots of information on the web about him -   for his first marriage he was given permission by H.M. the King to marry at the Chapel Royal in St. James Palace.

The National Archives have no pictures -  but because of his global travels and dealing with the nobility etc there must be a picture of him somewhere.

Can anybody help

The Sunday Times, 19 Nov 1972, carried an article of the cocktail circuit "demands" made on him as Vice Marshal of the Diplomatic Corps and how -

"....Mayall has come through it unscathed. There was a time when his waistline was beginning to surrender to the onslaught and he ruthlessly went to work on it. He's not only slimmer than when he became Vice-Marshal in 1965 which out to be encouraging to those of us unnamed who are in danger of writing their stories arm's length from the typewriter".

Lesson for many of us.

Hello,

I lived in Addis Ababa 1963-66 when Lees Mayall was Chargé d’Affaires (my dad was Military Attaché). I was 16-17 when I knew Lees and Mary but I remember them very well: they were a wonderful couple. I have a photo or two of Lees taken at cocktail parties at my dad's house, and if they might be of interest I would be delighted to scan and send them to you.

Lees was the most charming and gentle of gentlemen: an absolutely delightful chap. Mary was hilarious: the very caricature of the immensely upper class and yet incredibly down-to-earth lady. All "Bloody hell, where's m' gin 'n' tonic?" but a real darling.

Hello Ian

I have sent numerous replies and enlisted the help of Rootschat - this is another try.   I cannot get anything through on the e-mail you sent -   I cannot send a reply in personal messages as UI understand you are a new member and you have had to have used it twice before.   Can you please check your e-mail address as it appears to be incorrect.

Hi Dormouce,

I have been trying to help Michelew reply to your message, the email you typed was incorrectly typed and different a little to the email address you had registered with on RootsChat. You are best not to put your email address in posts because this is how spammers pick up on your email address.

Regards

Sarah
