Have you found Adam in 1871?  Maybe he and John are together.
Helen is with 6 children as head.  No Janet with her just Archibald and William from before plus 4 younger children.

At that address I can see
Helen Robson head 57 - should be 37
Archd 19
Wm 14
Maggie 8
Andrew 6
Isabella 3
Elizabeth 1

Are those children right?  No Adam or Janet or John listed  :-\

Remember the Census is based on where a person was at the time of the Census, not where a person  lived.  Adam as a mason, he may have been working away or visiting someone on that day, you may never know. He may have been working with or visiting his father who was also a mason.

Thanks Terianne

yes I have looked all over GB on the 1871 census to no avail.    His father Archibald is a lodger in Melrose and his mo is at 91 Castlegate Jedburgh but no sign anywhere of him and son John (b1858)

I've been looking too but nothing  :(

It's funny he died at the same address his mother was in 1871 yet isn't with her.
Helen is definitely down as Head which infers he wasn't at home with her and just got missed off.

Have you looked for a death for little John?

Hi M

yes lots of births and deaths at 91 Castlegate.     No sign of a death for young John at all.   As he was only 13 I presume he was an apprentice Mason helping Dad or he died before 1871 but nothing coming up at all
