Hilda Hutchins nee Blanchard London, Kensington
« on: Saturday 22 August 15 19:16 BST (UK) »
I am having trouble finding later information on my Great Grandmother, Hilda Blanchard, she married Nathan John Hutchins in 1920 in Kensington, London, they had 2 daughters Elsie and my grandmother Doris in 1928. Hilda had a third daughter, but unsure if it was her husbands child too. I can find no more information on either Hilda or her daughter after 1928. I am asking for any help or pointers on how I could trace her. Hilda Hutchins appears to be a very common name in London.

H**** was born 1928 with mother's maiden name Blanchard, so why do you think she  wasn't Nathan John Hutchins' daughter? Are you certain that she is no longer alive? If there is any possibility that she is you need to remove her name as Rootschat has a no living person policy.

I am unsure if the daughter born in 1928 had the same father because she would have been my grandmothers sister who knew nothing about her. She only knew of her elder sister. My grandmother was born in 1923, her mother was never really spoken of and family stories say she left the family with another man.  I would like to know what happened to both her and her daughter, although I appreciate this is probably one of those moments in my family history I will never find out the truth of.

The problem is, that if she went off with another man, she and the daughter could well have changed their names to his surname.

Did both of Hilda Blanchard's parents die in the Battersea area in 1954?
This may not be anything, but there is a Hilda Palmer on some immediate post war electoral rolls with Arthur J. and Helene S. Blanchard at 82 Northcote Road, Battersea
She is no longer listed with them in 1948, but then a Hilda Palmer appears at 20 Wickersley Road. A couple of years later another lady called H is also listed at that address, who may have just got married, and may relate. That is all rather speculative though.

You need to buy the birth certificate to see who the father is named as. You will then see their address at the time and maybe find an electoral register entry. If not you can ask the library local to the address if they can check what dates the family lived there and establish when they moved on -if they did.
The death certificates for J and Helene S will give an informant's name which hopefully would be a family member who you could then possibly trace.

1928 electoral register
Nathan John Hutchins is listed at 55 Kenway Road, Earls Court, in Kensington South Division

1929 electoral register
Hilda Hutchins is listed at 55 Kenway Road, but Nathan isn't. This is the first register where we see women over the age of 21, rather than 30
Also there were Patrick + Ellen Mary Sullivan, Elizabeth Blaney, and Thomas Palmer
Odd that the name Palmer has come up again (but may be coincidence)

1930 electoral register
All change, only Thomas Palmer is left from 1929 (he is there until 1933)

1929 the Blanchards were at 28 Redfield Lane, by the following year they had moved to Wallgrave Road. Both addresses are just round the corner from 55 Kenway Road, there's a kind of triangle. It wouldn't be surprising if Hilda later lived with her parents again for a time. Especially perhaps during and after the war when there was so much damaged and destroyed housing stock

An alleged address for one of the births, found elsewhere, is 28 Marloes Road. The address of St Mary Abbots Hospital, formerly known as the Kensington Union Infirmary

If you are lucky you might be able to pick Hilda up again in the 1939 National Register when that is released, hopefully soon. That could depend on what name she was using, but dates of birth were given.
