George William Medcalf born Bishopgate 1870. his father was also George William and his mother was Sarah Cawdon from various sources, however the mothers maiden name on the birth certificate is shown as Sarah  Carthen cant find Sarah Carthen - can anybody help please.

Hi,

You may already have this info but just posting it for others to have a look, which could help in the search for Sarah  :)

The marriage cert has the name Cawdon with Sarah's father record as William Cawdon (farmer)

Sarah signs the marriage cert with her mark.   In the census she lists her birthplace as Lincolnshire.  Maybe her accent gave a variation of spellings??

Born in Lincoln (circa 1837 per the 1871 census) or Martin, Lincoln (circa 1841 per the 1881 census)

This person on 1841 appeals, as the address is Newland St, parish of st Martin, Lincoln, although the adults in the household do not fit. The surname on the image may be spelled Cathon

I am looking at the birth certificate of Goerge william Medcalf born saint botolph 24th november 1869 birth registered 20th january.
its the registrars writing definitely shows mothers maiden name as Carthen, have no problem with the male line back to john medcalf and Mary King from Feering Essex.
I initially was following the Cawdon line until I got the birth certificate.
