Children of Maggie Jane Carruthers Steel
« on: Tuesday 25 August 15 13:26 BST (UK) »
Hi everyone (anyone?),

I've just finished researching the Steel branch of my ancestry and wondered if anyone could shed some light on something for me.

My 2 x great aunt, Maggie Jane Carruthers Steel, born Maggie Jane Carruthers in 1878 Kirlinton, Cumberland to Elizabeth Carruthers.  Her mother married Ephraim Harris Steel in Brampton (February 1881).  Elizabeth & Ephraim being my 2 x great grandparents.

On the 1881 census Maggie was listed as Maggie Jane Carruthers, and in 1891 Maggie Jane Steel.  In 1900 she married Robert Inglis in Brampton (under the name Maggie Jane Carruthers Steel).  They had 3 children - Walter Inglis (1900), Ephraim Harris Inglis (1902) and Elizabeth Agnes Inglis (1905) all born in Stanwix and registered at Carlisle.  Robert Inglis died in 1905, shortly after the birth of their daughter.

In 1907 Maggie married James Wilson in Brampton.  They had a son, James Gibson Wilson (1908 Brampton) and possibly a daughter, Annie E Wilson (1911 Brampton, mother Steel).  My question is this.  Both Walter Inglis and Annie Wilson died in 1914 (deaths registered at Brampton Jan-Mar).  Does anybody know what happened?

I don't really want to spend money on death certificates, as they are not my direct ancestors, but I would be very interested in the circumstances of their deaths.

Any information would be gratefully received.

Thanks for reading.

Sorry, but to find the cause of death you will need to get the certs.

But I am a bit confused as to how she is marrying James Wilson in 1907 if Walter Inglis didn't did till 1914.

Oh - I see - that was the 14 yr old son?

Edmonds/Edmunds - mainly Sussex
DeBoo - London
Green - Suffolk
Parker - Sussex
Kemp - Essex
Farrington - Essex
Boniface - West Sussex

Hi.

Thanks for your reply there.  As I said, it's more curiosity than anything. I just thought (hoped) there may be someone closer to that branch of the family (I'm actually the great grandson of Maggie Jane's half sister, Amy Steel) might have some knowledge passed down through the generations.

One day curiosity might get the better of my bank account, and I may get those certificates but, even though Annie's birth index lists mother's maiden name as Steel, I'm just not 100% certain that she was Maggie's daughter (though she probably was).

Any info on what happened to Maggie Jane herself after the 1911 census would also be appreciated.  I've can find nothing definitive.

Thanks.

Hi, so I'm related to Ephraim Harris Inglis the child of Maggie and Ephriam. Ephriam Harris Inglis Married my great grandads sister. When I was researching and being annoying asking my relatives all sorts of questions, it was stated that they died of illness, there was alot of tuberculosis back then so it may have been that. It's so strange how people are connected!
