Charles Schomberg
« on: Tuesday 25 August 15 14:27 BST (UK) »
I am currently researching my husbands family and am looking for information and details for Charles Schomberg who was apparently born at sea in 1805 according to the 1861 U.K. census.  I don't have his parents names or know whether he had any siblings.  He married a Henrietta La Marchant about 1856 but am unable to trace any record of a marriage certificate.  Charles and Henrietta had at least three children, their son Junius was born in 1858 and emigrated to Australia at some point before 1885 when he married Hope Thuell.  On the birth certificate of Junius it states that Charles occupation was a 'pay master military train' and on the 1861 census, a retired Lieutenant.  I hope these details may be helpful in someone tracing this elusive family, I've spent many hours trawling but to no avail.  Many thanks for your help.  Anne

is this the 1861 census you mean?

Charles Schomberg, 54 retired lieutenant & sea service
Henrietta 33 b Middlesex
Junior?? 21 b Bermondsey
Emma Deller servant

Ref: RG09/123/85/8

Junius/Junior was born in 1840 and not 1858 as per your post?? Have I got the right one?

Henrietta not old enough to be Junior's mother? Second marriage?

there is a birth for a Junius Le Marchant in 1858 in Middlesex.

If you think Charles married about 1856 - possibly to second wife - there is a marriage in Sept Qtr 1857 Lewisham 1d 829 of a Charles Marsh Seymour Schomberg - but FreeBMD lists two men and only one woman with this reference one possible wife is missing??

Edit -Sorry wrong family - two possible wives listed on Family Search https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:26HS-ZLK

Yes this is the census.  I have thought perhaps Charles was married twice and had child by the first marriage and named him Junias as is the second son born in 1858 for which I have a copy of the birth certificate.  I find it strange that I can't find Henrietta La Marchant or a marriage record for Charles and Henrietta.

Is it possible that the age of Junius in 1861 is incorrect and he is 2 rather than 21, which would fit in with the birth you have in 1958 for Junius Le Marchant    Schomberg   .  If this wasn't the case where was the Junius born 1858 in 1861??

The use of the mothers maiden name at a middle name for Junius could be an indication that the parents never married

Looking at a tree on Ancestry - Henrietta had a further child Grace in about 1868 Hammersmith after her father died in 1867.   I can't see a birth for Grace but there is a birth of a Grace Maud Marchant in Sept Qtr 1867 Kensington 1a 159

There is also a baptism on Anc of a Henrietta Marchant  28 Nov 1827 at St James, Clerkenwell with parents James and Eleanor Marchant address Great Bath St - James is listed as a Seal Engraver

Edit - There are other childrens baptisms for the couple including Adelaide in 1830, Fredrick in 1823 and Eleanor in 1815 and I think this could be the children in 1841 - living at Manor House, St Lukes, Chelsea

Eleanor Marchant 26
Juliana Marchant    15
Henrietta Marchant 13
Adelaide Marchant 10

Interesting - Tree on Anc lists the parents of Frederick b 1823 Clerkenwell as John Le Merchant and Eleanor although at the moment I can't see a reference where the use of 'Le' originated from??
