Farmer's daughter in Hertfordshire
« on: Wednesday 26 August 15 22:14 BST (UK) »
I'm trying to trace info on a family in Hertfordshire who lived in the 1800s. So far I have:
Mary Johnson born approx 1817 died at age 37 due to farm accident.
Mother died in childbirth when Mary was about 10.
The family lived on a successful farm in Hertfordshire.
There were 2 brothers & 4 sisters.
I'm struggling to find any relevant info. Can anyone help? Like who Mary married- if at all. The farm name- if poss. Etc :)

Was Mary Johnson her maiden name? If she died under this name she can't have married. Can you tell us a bit more about her eg how do you know that she died in that way?

Do you have the family on any census?

Hi, yes it's her maiden name, but not sure whether she married or died under this name.

I've heard stories about her. But don't know if it's true or family myth.

I've not had much luck with census. As unsure if dates are exact.

Other than that, nothing more x

The problem is, that if she was born in 1817, she could have been married before registration in 1837 and before the 1841 so we don't know what name to look for in the censuses.

Is there any more you can give us - any idea where in Hertfordshire she might have been born or died?

Not got any more other than that. The stories say she was about 37 years old when she was killed. But got no more to go on. Was just putting it out as a long shot lol. See if I can put truth to myth. :)

There is a Mary Johnson on the 1841 in Aldbury, but she is married with children, so if Johnson is her maiden name it can't be her.

FamilySearch has a Mary Ann Johnson's baptism

Mary Ann Johnson
Christening Date    11th Oct 1818
Little Hormead, Hertford,
Father    Edward Johnson
Mother    Ann Johnson

Say if worked with that info, which is great, could it be proved cause of death for her mother anywhere? Which would be childbirth.
I would imagine farmers would be religious back then so that could well be her christening. Thank you for finding that out :) x

This is interesting, there is a burial of an Ann Johnson, aged 30, on 3rd April 1825 at St Nicholas, Little Hormead, Hertford. However, there is also a burial of a Mary Ann Johnson aged 9 on the 19th June 1828 at St Nicholas, Little Hormead, Hertford. That could be the one whose baptism I found, in which case that rules her out.

Ann Johnson's death sounds about right. Young woman who died. It was in childbirth. There may be another Johnson born at time which could prove that. It's annoying when parts of a story are there lol! But interesting tho. :) x
