Hello again,
I've had a look in all the Memorial Inscription books in the library, and there are very few Peggs anywhere in the area. There's Arnold and Eliza Ann in Skerton as mentioned already, and two graves in Heysham St Peter's churchyard:
Charles Pegg and Emmanuel Pegg in one grave
Helena Pegg, Queenie Pegg and Helena McNaught in the other

That's just the memorials of course, not the full burial registers.
Lancs OPC has done the burial registers up to 1900 for Skerton St Luke's, where a lot of Peggs were baptised, and there is a burial for Charles Pegg, age 4 months, in 1885.
So possibly there were other Peggs buried at St Luke's but without a headstone.
http://www.lan-opc.org.uk/

I do feel that the family story about dying of consumption might be a 'red herring' as if she had died in an institution, her death would have been recordsd by the authorities and we would have found the death registration by now. These things do get muddled over time and with many re-tellings of the tale.

Sorry not to be much help so far.
 :) Barbara

There is a female with the right initials in Lancaster on the last census - age does not quite match though, shows on free index FindMyPast.   Possibly the Asylum as only listed by initials  :-\

Lydia had a brother, Arnold Pegg?  He is in the 1901 household as well.
He is buried in Skerton Cemetery - I have a list of names on MIs compiled by the LFHHS
There is an Eliza Ann Pegg in the same grave.

I live locally and would like to help but am going on holiday tomorrow! Will try and keep an eye on this thread from a distance.

Arnold Broughton Pegg was born sept qtr 1887 - if he was Lydias brother there is a gap of 21 years - do you think Arnold may be the son of Lydia - could she have had 2 children ?? is it possible that Arnold was born July 1887 and Eliza bap july 1888 and were brother and sister ??
have we found a baptism for Arnold in 1887 ?
ADDED
Baptism: 15 Jun 1887 St Luke, Skerton, Lancashire, England
Arnold Pegg - [Child] of George Pegg & Mary
     Abode: Skerton
     Occupation: House Painter
     Baptised by: John
SO Lydia was 21 at the baptism -
silly question - could we have TWO Lydia Broughton Pegg  ??
I would say this is a sibling of Lydia - 2 years after  Lydias baptism
Baptism: 11 Jul 1869 St Peter, Liverpool, Lancashire, England
Joseph George Broughton Pegg - [Child] of George Joseph Pegg & Mary
     Born: 5 Nov 1868
     Abode: Wavertree
     Occupation: Printer
...............................................
then a gap of SIX years and a different location
.............................................................
if it is a brother of Lydia - why do the baptisms in Skerton show George as a  as a House PAINTER
Baptism: 8 Feb 1874 St Luke, Skerton, Lancashire, England
George Broughton Pegg - [Child] of George Broughton Pegg & Mary
     Abode: Skerton
     Occupation: Painter

Baptism: 20 Jun 1875 St Luke, Skerton, Lancashire, England
Ann Goring Pegg - [Child] of George Pegg & Mary
     Abode: Skerton
     Occupation: Painter
     Baptised by: John

Baptism: 25 Apr 1880 St Luke, Skerton, Lancashire, England
Ernest Broughton Pegg - [Child] of George Pegg & Mary
     Born: 15 Apr 1880
     Abode: Main St
     Occupation: Painter
     Baptised by: E W Brereton
Baptism: 23 Aug 1885 St Luke, Skerton, Lancashire, England
Charles Broughton Pegg - [Child] of George Broughton Pegg & Mary
     Abode: Skerton
     Occupation: Painter
     Baptised by: John  Brack

all on Lan-opc
where are George and Mary in 1871 census - Liverpool or Skerton ? and what is the occupation of George ?
oakes,liverpool..neston..backford..poulton cum spittal(bebington)middlewich,cheshire......   sacht,helgoland  .......merrick,herefordshire adams,shropshire...tipping..ellis..  jones,garston,liverpool..hartley.dunham massey..barker. salford

George and Mary are in Everton in 1871 and he's a painter
RG10/3822/78/2
George J B Pegg age 27, decorator & painter
Mary age 25, wife born Oldham
Lydia age 5, born Liverpool
Joseph age 2, born Liverpool
John age 1 month, born Liverpool

I found Arnold's grave in Skerton Cemetery but cannot attach photo as you can't do attachments in the Requests board for some reason.
Skerton Cemetery, section B, row 4, grave no. 19
"In ever loving memory of
Arnold Pegg
beloved husband of
Eliza Ann Pegg
died 2nd Sep 1961
aged 74 years
Also the above
Eliza Ann Pegg
died 31st Aug 1962
aged 74 years"

You could try emailing the cemeteries department to ask if anyone else is buried there, not recorded on the headstone.
http://www.lancaster.gov.uk/environmental-health/cemeteries/advice-and-information/
click on 'Morecambe Town Hall' for contact info

You could also try emailing St Luke's church to see if they have grave registers and could they tell you if anyone else is buried with George Pegg and Mary Pegg her parents.
http://www.achurchnearyou.com/wwwstlukes-skertoncouk/

St Luke' burial registers up to 1928 have gone to Lancashire Archives, so they may have hung on to later ones and/or grave plans.

Hello

I am the Great Grandson of

Ernest Broughton Pegg born: 1908 - Died in 1997 I think Skerton, Lancaster, his son's name was ''John Broughton Pegg'' who's daughter is my mother.

My mothers two brothers also carry the Broughton name, as does one male from the next generation... so this is a family story I've heard alot. All males on the Pegg side are to carry the Broughton name by way of tradition.

Something to do with a large estate confiscated by the MOD during ww1. Something I cannot confirm or find any information on so far.

I have had a 2 year break from researching this line, but the name Lydia is an unknown and so are
some of the other names of children that I have read above.

I have just contacted my mother who has recalled that Ernie (her granddad) only ever said ''They lost a few'' or words to that effect.

So information wise I may be able to add more information regarding the Pegg's we know lived in Lancaster/Garstang area immediate family.

I would really like to see anything you have on the Pegg's and help in any way if I can, but mum knows alot more than I which might help anyone with work to do.

I may visit all the grave sites mentioned just out of interest and maybe fresh details.

Thankyou for posting the above thread.

Regards

Lee.

Feel free to email me.

Welcome to Rootschat Lee  :)

You may already have found this, but the middle name Broughton seems to go back to a marriage in Liverpool in 1801 between Joseph Pegg and Lydia Broughton. From Lancs OPC:

Marriage: 16 May 1801 St Nicholas, Liverpool, Lancashire, England
Joseph Pegg - Servant man, Liverpool
Lydia Broughton - Spinster, Liverpool
Witness: John Newton; Mary Broughton
Married by Licence by: Sam. Renshaw, A. M., Rector
http://www.lan-opc.org.uk/

The register image is on Ancestry.

Hello Barbara,

Thank you for your welcoming message and for responding so fast, this was unexpected.  :)

To be honest I did not know this information existed at all. 1801 is the furthest back I have known, I am still in Lancaster with my searches as I did not fully work out the Liverpool connections until recently. So this information is valuable to me, again I am grateful for you pointing this out.

Shame great grandad Ernie is no longer with us, He was a font of family knowledge.

We did have a male relative who ran off with a servant girl, family fued and such.

A murderer

And this Broughton Hall story may be revealed one day hopefully.

I am gathering and Compiling all the information and tree to be handed down to future generations so we can keep the history and it's creators alive so to speak.

So I really do appreciate you taking the time to respond.

I have a small amount of details, a few press clippings, but really alot of my Information is verbal, going back to when I was small, and chats with my mum.

I have not worked this site out yet but I will have a look for anything related.

All the best
Regards
 :)
Lee.
