Passports
« on: Saturday 29 August 15 12:42 BST (UK) »
Hi.
Could someone tell me please.
Back in the mid 60's when people emigrated to different places. Did they need passports? If so were lists kept?

I have a mother and son that I'm trying to trace that just disappeared about that sort of time.

In general passports were mandatory in the 1960s. For UK passports, records of issue were mostly destroyed after 11 years.

In addition to a passport, the emigrant would often have to have obtained a visa (or similar document) from Embassy of the country they were migrating to, authorising them to settle there. Finally the immigration authorities in the new country may have a record of the arrival (though whether such records for the 1960s would be open to the public I can't say).

Hi

It was possible to emigrate in the 1960s without a passport, I didn't hold a passport and travelled on a Document of Identity issued by the Australian Government.
