Orphanages. 1890 - 1920
« on: Thursday 03 September 15 17:09 BST (UK) »
I am looking for orphanages on the Isle of Wight between the years 1890 to 1920.  Three of the same family were placed in one between these dates but unable to find any homes there.  Maybe children were placed in Southampton.  Any information or advice would be very welcome.  Many thanks.

Hi and welcome :)

Have you had a look for the relevant children in the censuses?  Depending on the precise dates, you may be able to find one or more of them enumerated in the relevant institution(s).

If you are happy to provide names and birthdates/birthplaces, and assuming all concerned are now deceased, I am sure Rootschatters will be very happy to help with the search (though we cannot provide information from the 1911 census for you, other than what is available by using the free index).

Thank you so much for your prompt reply.  I am not finding it very easy to navigate the site but no doubt it will become easier with use.  The children are: Theresa Hunt  b. 1885.  William Hunt  b. 1887 and Ada E Hunt 1899.  Their mother remarried after the death of their father to a William H Lambert b. 1848 but I do not know if he formally adopted them.  They were placed in the orphanage in 1893 when their mother died.
If you can help or direct me to where I can find out any information, I would be delighted.  As you see, I am fairly new to this hobby.  Many thanks.

FreeBMD shows a birth registration for Theresa Mary Hunt, Dec qtr 1884 Isle of Wight.  It looks as though she married Barton upon Irwell district in Lancashire in 1908 to James Norris, and died in the same area in 1966 aged 62.

Ada is still with her step father in 1901, and his next wife - must be his 3rd.

What makes you think they went into an orphanage?

Frederick looks likely to be one of these two, given his Nursling birthplace per the 1891 census:

Frederick David Hunt, Dec qtr 1883 Romsey
Frederick George Hunt, Mar qtr 1884 Romsey (actually this one seems to be a different person, separately accounted for in 1891)

Likely marriage for the parents: Frederick William HUNT to Ann Elizabeth TAYLOR, Sep qtr 1883 Romsey.
