What am I looking at when...
« on: Friday 04 September 15 14:56 BST (UK) »
...I read "Bethnal Green, London" or "Mile End, London" or "Parish Church, Southend Essex."

Are these small neighbourhoods in London?

How could I find out more about England from 1800 to 1900?
I'm looking for something that would tell about the people in the towns, their work life, etc.

Yes, I google alot but sometimes difficult to decipher what is the "real" info.

Bethnal Green is an area of London. So is Mile End.

Southend is a town to the east of London in Essex - so very different

If you are finding reference to these in 19th century documents, they could well be referring to the parish.
But hard to advise unless we know where you are seeing these words.

Googling should find you a good map of London and surrounding areas.

As for finding out about the people and their lives, that will vary according to the person! A rich merchant would have a different life to a poor factory worker for example.

Edmonds/Edmunds - mainly Sussex
DeBoo - London
Green - Suffolk
Parker - Sussex
Kemp - Essex
Farrington - Essex
Boniface - West Sussex

A good map is very helpful in family history research. Genuki is a good reference site:

(Bethnal Green and Mile End were classed as being in Middlesex.)

A couple of things which may be of interest:
There is lots to explore on the booth site:

including maps: http://booth.lse.ac.uk/cgi-bin/do.pl?sub=view_booth_only&args=534191,182423,2,large,1

This excellent map series is searchable by place name: http://maps.nls.uk/geo/find/#zoom=6&lat=53.3995&lon=-3.0305&layers=39&point=0,0 and selecting side by side view from the top left shows the old with the new and how much the area has changed:
