Hi Cookie Cat,

Welcome to Rootschat ;D

When did the sons go over to Newfoundland? Were they married, and /or  had children at that time? Can sometimes work back with more information from the ones you do know about.

Cheers

John william Arnold(1815-1896) and brother William Arnold (1825-1887) came to Newfoundland as stowaways in 1836. Their father was apparently a protestant sheep farmer. they left England and came to Greenspond, NL on a fishing schooner that was bound for that same settlement. John was 19 when he left so that puts him born around 1817 but that could be incorrect.
John Arnold married Hannah "Ann" White in 1840. They had five children: Thomas 1841, James 1851, William 1857, Hannah 1858, and Edith 1852.  There was another child which died at birth in 1846. John moved his family from Greenspond to Thimble Cove, Bonavista Bay in 1853. After John and Hannah died the three brothers moved to Traytown, Newfoundland along with their two sisters who married two Ralph brothers.
William Arnold (1825-1887) married Jane White (1825-?) and had three sons: George 1855, John 1858, and James 1872 and a daughter Eliza 1864.

So their father William, couldn't have been born in 1815, maybe you meant to type another year?   :)

This online tree, says John William was born in Cheselbourne, Dorset
http://wc.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=:1563006&id=I119573242

Do you happen to know where that place of birth was sourced from? Was their father's name found on NF documentation?

Cheers

Found, on an online tree, a transcript of a 1965 memoir of a grandson  of William ARNOLD ( dates given  here for William are 1820-1886). It says the fellow immigrant was William John ARNOLD Sr and that they were cousins, not brothers?

Same gist of information posted here:

Thanks. I just found in my notes, not sure of source, that John Wm (1815-1896) me Mary Ann White (1817-1914) was son of Wm John Arnold sr. But no dates given.mary was daughter of Wm White and Ann unknown.          Also Wm Arnold  (1820/25- 1867) married Jane White (1825-1867) not sure on his parents. Jane was daughter of John White and Deborah Grace Parsons.

Looking for my great grandfather Jacob James Squires. Born around 1884 died May 11, 1907 Green Bay, NL. He came across on a schooner at some point. Don't know much about him. He died just after my nan, Lily Charlotte, was born in 1905. He married Mary Ann Tilley (1884-1956) d/o James Tilley and Merina Hounsell. Not sure if he was born England, Scotland or Ireland... Any help would be great
