Harriet's maiden name
« on: Saturday 05 September 15 22:39 BST (UK) »
hello, hope you can help?
This is my 1st post & looking at the forum you guys seem to be able work Magic! 😀
I'm trying to find the maiden name of Harriett Cockayne
According to the 1851 census she lived in Sheffield, & was born in Eckington in 1816
She is listed as being married to John Cockayne  & they have 5 children
Charles, Frances, John, George & Amelia.
Can't see her for 1861 but she is on the 1871 census in Brightside Sheffield, this time as Harriett Rich, widow with Frances, Amelia, Ann, Charles & Mary.
I can't seem to find a marriage for either Cockayne or Rich. I know ordering a birth certificate of one of the children will probably give the answer, I was just hoping that I'd missed something before paying my £9.25.

Hope you can help.

First marriage might have been before the start of civil registration?

Possibly another marriage inbetween - I see a Harriet Sorby b. Ecklington in Sheffield in 1861 (will have to check who she's with - can't see that on familysearch):

http://www.freebmd.org.uk/
Sep quarter 1857 Sheffield
Harriet/Harriett/Harriot Cockyane, to Samuel Sorby
Sep quarter 1869 Sheffield
Samuel Sorby died aged 62
Sep quarter 1870 Sheffield
Harriet Sorby to Joseph Rich

(unclear what happened to Joseph)

Welcome to Rootschat.

I see from the 1841 census that the first child was born in 1837, so it does look as if they married before registration started.

According to familysearch, Harriet was baptised 28th May 1815 at Eckington, Derbyshire, the daughter of George and Amelia Barker.

Wow you are all amazing.

Thank you so much, so she married 3 times!
Harriet Barker to John Cockayne (before records)
Harriet Cockayne to Samuel Sorby
Harriet Sorby  to Joseph Rich
No wonder I was confused I didn't think of the additional marriage or the civil records not starting. I wonder why no church record for marriage if they had the children baptised?

Thank you so much again.

There will be a marriage record; it is just waiting to be found. The first two parishes to check would be Eckington, Harriet's parish, or the one where the eldest child was baptised.

Perhaps now that it has been established where they were living, someone may be able to look at the Parish Records for you.
