Hi

The 19 is the volume number and 29 is the page number.  You need all the info shown when you order a copy of the birth certificate.

Yes - mothers maiden names are shown on around 99% of birth certs.

Carlin (Ireland & Liverpool) Doughty & Wright (Liverpool) Dick & Park (Scotland & Liverpool)

The birth date for William Smith is abt 1843 and not 1941 as your suggestion for baptism.

Hi,
Do you have a birth reg for William born abt 1843 ?
As far as i can see on Freebmd there are only two births registered in Altrincham both 1841.
There are none for Wilmslow which is where it should be if he was born in Styall.
Have a look for yourself here.

Hello All Thank you for your further replies.

The birth date of William I was going by the 1851 Census. I have revisited this and his age looks like 8 years. I think there  is every possibility that William was born in 1841.

Much appreciated xxx

Hi Carole,

I applied to Altrincham for a copy of Hannah's birth certificate but the number I gave was not a match. Volume 19 page number 29 Line down 6.

I contacted them again using  ANN SMITH BORN ABT 1848, BORN NORTHENDEN, PARENTS GEORGE AND MARY SMITH. ALT/5/317 was found but the birth was not in Northenden.

I was told by Trafford that there is also a possibility that Northenden in the 1840’s may have been linked to the Wilmslow district of registration. But this does not explain why there is no entry for John Smith born 1858 see below.

I further tried John Smith,  Registration Year:1858 Registration Quarter: Apr-May-Jul Registration district: Altrincham Volume: 8a
He would have been born at either  Moor End, Northenden or Royal Green Road, Northenden.

The reply from Trafford was Thank you for your email.  We have checked our index for 1858 and are unable to locate an entry for John Smith in Altrincham, we have doubled checked this with colleagues in the office.

Would you know where I can search for a birth certificate of one of the children.

Thank you Anita

Hi Anita

Altrincham, Styal, Wilmslow etc. come under the Bucklow Registration District if you are using FreeBMD.

Why not look at the dates here as it may help you decided which which area based on the dates you are looking at:

Hello Anita,
The numbers that Carole gave to you... Volume 19 Page 29... are the reference numbers you would need to order Hannah's birth certificate from the General Register Office at a cost of £9.25p

http://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/

If I'm understanding your post it seems that you have applied directly to Altrincham/Trafford and this is the reason they can't help you.
The local offices use a different numbering system.
You can if you wish use the on line order form found on Cheshirebmd it will cost you £10
This link will take you to the page you need.
Click the order on line box and fill in the form that comes up.
