Civil War 2nd Great-Grandfather
« on: Monday 07 September 15 17:02 BST (UK) »
My 2nd great-grandfather, Michael Maguire, might have fought in the Civil War. I have some evidence that he was in the Army from May 1864 to July 1864; he must have been badly wounded to serve so short a term. He was born in April 1846 at Coldfields, Moycarkey, County Tipperary. He married Catharine Sullivan in Boston on 21 Aug 1870. I found a Death Certificate that says he died of Pneumonia at 99 Gold Street, South Boston. The address is important because Catharine makes a claim on his Civil War service in 1890 and her address is 99 Gold Street! If anyone has any more information or another place I can look to find more about his Civil War service I'll be very grateful. All my information has come from ancestry.com, rootsireland.ie or familysearch.org.

If I have the right person the pension index card show that he served in 9th Infantry and under Captain Littlefield in the Strafford Guards, New Hampshire Militia.

The Strafford Guards seem only to have been active between May 5th and July 28th 1864. https://familysearch.org/learn/wiki/en/Littlefield's_Company,_Strafford_Guards,_New_Hampshire_Militia

According to the register of that unit he was 21 in 1864, b. Ireland, "res Rollinsford, cred Somersworth", died 12 Jan 1890 in South Boston.

The New Hampshire Patriot and State Gazette of May 4th 1864 reported that "the Heavy Artillery enlisted to the garrison the forts at Portsmouth had been ordered to the seat of war, and the Strafford Guards of Dover and National Guards of Manchester, independent companies of State Militia, had been ordered into service for 60 days to take care of the forts."

coughlinja, it would be more ideal to reply on the thread rather than by private message. That way it keeps all members updated. Also it saves members looking for information you may have found.

Unfortunately no. He sounds much more exciting than my 2nd great-grandfather. Just discovered that my Michael Maguire was a member of Captain Littlefield's Strafford Guards in the New Hampshire Militia and in 1864 (he was 18 at the time) he was guarding a fort in New Hampshire. Thanks for that site, though. Historical letters have such an impact.
