Ireland German adoptees, Frederick Williams
« on: Monday 07 September 15 19:37 BST (UK) »
Hi, been trying to trace my grandfathers history. Got his marriage, can't find his birth details. There is unconfirmed story that he was adopted by a family in Kill, Ireland and he came from Germany. He was born around 1898. Any idea how I find records?

Hello and welcome.

Did your grandfather marry in Ireland?
Did he have the same name as his 'adopted family'?
Have you found them on the Irish censuses 1901/1911.
There doesn't seem to be any young person born Germany on those censuses though.
Is there a father's name on his marriage certificate?

People would need more information in order to advise you.

Regards

Heywood

Many thanks for your reply. I think the German adoption is speculation, no one knows for sure.
My grandfather did marry in Ireland in Rathcoole 1928 to my grandmother Rose Kearns. His occupation was recorded as soldier at portobello barracks. I think he was born 1898, but can't find any records of his birth or his parents names. He lived in Rathcoole / Newcastle area from married and had children Fred (my dad), rose, Sheila, Sarah and Theresa. I don't know where he came from prior to his marriage as the barracks is address. Can't find him on the census of 1901/11.He moved to London with daughter Sarah after my grandmother died and I think he died in London I think in 1975. Thanks.

I see what you mean from the certificate.
Do you have his year of birth or approximate?
I wonder if you could find out which regiments were at the barracks at the time of his marriage?

The published tree I have seen shows him in Monaghan in 1901 and Enniskillen in 1911. I am not sure how the two are linked though. :-\

Added- they are not the same person- both are in 1901!

Hi yes, Frederick williams. His son Frederick Michael Williams, my father was born in 1931 and also joined the army, based at curragh camp.
I think grandfather Fred was born around 1898.

This is the one who is a boarder with this same family in 1901 in Monaghan.
In 1911 he is shown as a son.

Have you seen this family before?

Yes, just yesterday, both me and my Colusin (who I have not met yett)are searching. My cousin found a link to a member 'unabobby' but I discounted this because it said (in the post chain) that my grandad married in Belfast and I know her married in Rathcoole.
Could it be?
