Hi Alistair

I also think the Charlotte A ELDRIDGE in Chartham with the CORK family in 1871 is your Charlotte.  Perhaps her parents moved away from Canterbury between 1861 and Charlotte's birth?  Chartham & Petham are adjoinging villages.

Can't seem to come up with anything else conclusive at the moment.

I suppose you could always send to Canterbury Registry Office and ask them to look for a birth certificate for George Thomas ELDRIDGE/ALDRIDGE b.Thanington or Canterbury with parents Alfred & Sarah - it could be the one registered in March quarter 1862 Canterbury though if he was born in Thanington rather than Canterbury then it should come under the registration district of Bridge http://www.fhsc.org.uk/genuki/REG/ken.htm ???

Best wishes

Hi Alistair,
This certainly makes interesting reading, I can add one small snippet from the 1841 and 1851 census in Petham:
ref HO107 468-20 folio 12: Garlinge Green, Petham (1841)
John Webb age 30 ag lab
Mary do age 25
Sarah do age 6
Thomas do age 3
Charlott do age 1
all born in county
ref HO107 1623 Folio 70: Garlinge Green, Petham (1851)
John Webb head mar age 43 waggoner or lab born Wye
Mary Ann do wife mar age 37 born Chilham
Thomas do son age 12 farm lab born Petham
Charlott do dau age 11 scholar born do
Mary do dau age 8 scholar born do
Caroline do dau age 7 scholar born do
John do son age 4 born do
These entries confirm the 'sister' relationship between Sarah and Charlotte.

These entries are from Thanington:
ref HO107 1623 folio 118: Iffin farm, Thanington (1851)
George Moat head mar age 39 ag lab born Thanington
Harriett do wife mar age 37 born Sturry
George do son age 14 born Thanington
Ann do dau age 9 born do
Rachel do dau age 7 born do
Mary do age 4 born do
and living next door: Iffin Cottage
William Eldridge head mar age 40 ag lab born  Thanington
Charlotte do wife mar age 42 born Canterbury
Charlotte Amy do dau age 20 born Thanington
and on folio 114: Wincheap Street, Thanington (1851)
George Moat head mar age 62 ag lab born Chartham
Frances do wife mar age 73 born Blean
Mary do dau un age 39 born Nackington
Henry do grandson age 16 born Thanington.
I've checked the 1841 census, sadly there is no Alfred Eldridge shown living with William and family, so maybe just coincidence that they were living next door to the Moat's.
Hope this helps,
xx Carol.

Thank you carol.
There is another george Moat who married Charlotte Webb
and who moved to Windsor. This is the George Moat who appeared to bring up my grandmother Charlotte Ann Eldridge , she gave her address as her residence in Windsor when she married Robert McCormick in 1886. What happened to her father, Alfred Eldridge, is one of the mysteries I have yet to solve,
                                   many thanks

Hi Alistair,
Here's a possible entry in 1841 for Alfred and family:
(He's the right age, and in the right parish for his wedding)
ref HO107 489-16 folio 18? page 2: Old Ruttington Lane, St Mary Northgate, Canterbury
John Eldridge age 50 cordwainer
Ann do age 50
John do age 20 labourer
Mercy do age 15
Julia do age 15
Charles do age 14
Alfred do age 12
Eliza do age 9
all born in county
xx Carol

Thank You Carol,
You have found the right parents for Alfred Eldridge, John was  listed as a shoemaker on Alfred and Sarah Ann Webb's marriage certificate. Cordwainers were shoemakers.Going back through your e-mails it appears that Sarah Ann Webb was not living with her parents by 1851 when she was 16. It could be that after her marriage to Alfred Eldridge on 4/3/1861 they were boarders with the Royle family.( As Aldridge) I am left wondering if they moved to Midhurst in Sussex where a Charlotte Ann Eldridge was born in 1864, the correct year for my grandmother. It looks like all the George Moats are generations apart of the same family, from 1789 to 1838. I have spent the last few months concentrating on the Ulster-Scots side of my family where records are even less complete, it is time I got back to my grandmother,
            Many thanks

Hello Carol,
I have just had a reply from Sussex, the Midhurst Charlotte ann eldridge is not my grandmother. I guess I will have to try Kent records office.Did you receive my eearlier e-mail today?
                              regards

Hi Alistair,
Glad I've found the right Eldridge family for you in 1841. It gives you another generation of names to work with.

I found another possible birth registration for Charlotte:
Dec qtr 1866 Charlotte P Eldridge, Bridge 2a 647. The registration district of Bridge covers the area around Canterbury, including Petham and Thanington, so this could be relevant, although a couple of years out from your calculations. Maybe it would be worth looking for a death for Alfred sometime after this date and before 1871, when both children had been 'farmed out'.
