** this is his grandson and have ben able to trace him

However, the only marriage record that I can find (from Wardleworth, Lancashire, England about 6 kms from Oldham) has a MARTHA Lord listed.

Martha Lord & Robert Scholfield
Marriage:   May 17 1785
 Wardleworth, Lancashire, England
Wife:   Martha Lord
Husband:   Robert Scholfield
Indexing Project (Batch) Number:   I04791-0
System Origin:   England-EASy
GS Film number:   1545749

Was it common practice in the 1800s to change name from Martha to Mary?   Or could he have become a widower and then remarried?

I can't find a death certificate for Martha prior to the 1841 census.

thank you

Familysearch shows a christening for a Robert Scholfield 1760. Father Abraham Mother Martha - could this be him?

Taht could be Robert, but I doubt it's the Martha in the 1841 census - she'd have to be 100.

The 1841 census shows Robert to 80 and assuming that his mother had her at 20, then she'd be 100.

But I see your point.  However, wouldn't they try and differeniate between motehr and son by calling at least 90 or 85 or something?

There is a marriage on familysearch with an Ann, not a million miles from Oldham - sorry I'm not very familiar with the Lancashire parishes

Robert Scholefield m Ann Dawson 09 Oct 1787 at Prestwich, Lancashire - could be a  misspelling of Scholfield?

Ok - on family search I found this:

Burial Place    Parochial Chapelry Of Milnrow Lancaster, England
Age    47
Birth Date    1788
Marital Status    Married
Spouse's Name    Robert Scholfield

On my heritage.com

Mary Scholfield
Gender:   Female
Marital status:   Married
Burial:   May 31 1835
 Milnrow, Lancashire, England

Indexing Project (Batch) Number:   I01788-5

Do you think that this could be Mary?  Then that would mean a remarriage for the 1841 census if I am reading it correctly.

Cathryn - do you have any more information on Thomas? Do you know where he is after 1841? A later census would give his birthplace.

It would help to know where he was born in Lancashire,  and trace his grandparents up through him. If we could identify his parents names through his birth we could possibly identify which of the entries are for his grandparents. Unfortunately there are a few Thomas Scholfield/Schofields in the Oldham area for the right range of birth years. And even more outside Oldham.
