DICKEN / DICKENS
« on: Thursday 10 September 15 04:04 BST (UK) »
Hello, you helped me with a query on my family tree earlier this year - THANKYOU.  I am now helping a friend trace his ancestors. His 2nd great-grandfather was Samuel Dickens b abt Dec 1837 Pownall Fee, Cheshire UK; married Ann Turner (1840-1928); d 28 May 1915 Queensland, Australia.  Samuel had a brother James Dicken b abt 1841 Cheshire who did not come to Australia. I think James married Ann Colclough (1843-1880).  I am trying to trace their parents & grandparents.  I think the father was Samuel Dicken b abt 1781, but haven't been able to get any further than that.

There is some confusion about whether the family was Dicken or Dickens as my friend thinks the family added the s on the end at some time in the 1800s.

Any help in pointing me in the right direction would be greatly appreciated.

Ruth

Is this Samuel's marriage?

https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:F78F-WPF

Marriages December Quarter 1860

DICKEN, Samuel
TURNER, Ann
Stockport
Vol. 8a
Page 127

This certificate would give you an occupation for Samuel's father and help to find them in census records.

Possible birth registrations from FreeBMD:

March qtr 1838
Altrincham registration district     vol 19, page 23
Dicken, Samuel

September qtr 1839
Macclesfield district     vol 19, page 114
Dicken, James

According to the obituary on Trove, Samuel arrived in Australia in 1858.
So, that 1861 marriage can't be him? ::)

I think the 1860 marriage is correct as Ann nee Turner's death certificate is on a tree on Ancestry and it states that she was married in Stockport, Cheshire. Samuel, Ann and eldest daughter Sarah Ann appear in the 1861 census in Cheshire. Samuel's parents, Samuel and Hannah can be found in the 1841/1851/1861 census in Cheshire. Samuel was a Farmer and quite a bit older than Hannah. By 1871 Hannah is listed as a widow but I can't see an obvious death.

The 1860 marriage was on 3 Dec at Stockport and lists both bride and groom as of full age.   Samuel was an engineer with father Samuel Dicken - farmer.  Residence at time of marriage Stockport.   No family witnesses
