is John Snaith the son of Francis Snaith and Elizabeth Dryden
« on: Friday 11 September 15 04:02 BST (UK) »
On his marriage certificate (1856 in Newcastle-on-Tyne to Hannah Smith) John Snaith's father appears as Francis Snaith, a husbandman.  John Snaith (abt 1823 -1907) is also identified as a husbandman.  I have found a Francis Snaith, married to Elizabeth Dryden and the father of several children, but John is not included.  I am wondering if there is another Francis Snaith married to an Elizabeth who could be John's father.  I have looked and looked but can't find another Francis Snaith.   I would be very grateful for any information you might have.
Thank you,
Barbara

Thank you so much, Trish.  You have been so helpful.  I was especially pleased to find the baptismal record of John Snaith.  I think I can now safely assume that John was part of the Francis Snaith family as you have listed.  I was confused as he did not seem to show up in the census and I could not find his birth record.  I am wondering: did the census record all family members or just those in residence the night of the census.  Of course, by the time of the 1941 census, John would have been 19 years old and perhaps off on his own.

He married in 1856 and he and his father were both described as “husbandmen”, which I think perhaps meant tenant farmers.  And yet on the marriage certificate the address is given as Victoria Terrace in Tyne Dock.  After that he and his family stayed in the Tyne Dock area and he worked at various unskilled jobs in the shipping industry.  So, I am thinking that perhaps he continued at farm work until he married.  I noticed on the following page in the 1851 census a farming family with a son called William Glass (Glafs)--a William Glass signed the marriage certificate as a witness, and so that really secures John in that family for me.

I think Francis Snaith died in 1856.   John Snaith’s wife died in 1863, and Elizabeth, the widow of Francis, went to live with the family to take care of the children, one of whom was named John Francis.

I hope I haven’t gone on too long.  I am fairly new to this and am amazed and fascinated by all one can infer from these records--and with help from people like you!

Thank you again, Trish.  And congratulations on your beautiful new baby.  No wonder you sign yourself “Happy Me”.

I made a mistake, Victoria Terrace is in Newcastle; they later moved to Tyne Dock.

Hi Barbara.
Dont worry I enjoy getting a bit of extra info on the people I am researching for others.
It is likely John would be working away from Home in 1841as you say at age 19.
Yes, the Census only has household members there on Census night.

I am glad I could find his Baptism for you to confirm his Parents :)

Thank you very much, Trish, for the extra information and for writing again.

And thank you, Jennifer, for the interesting information about brother Simon.  Poor Simon didn’t have a very long life.  I found myself wondering what happened to all those children growing up in a farming family, and so I really appreciated hearing about one of them. :)

With gratitude to both you ladies! :)
