WHERE IS THIS? - 1861 Conaresk Farm, Dunoon & Kilmun, Argyll (please)
« on: Sunday 13 September 15 19:56 BST (UK) »
Hi Folks,

I have entered some info. into my tree from a census record online (prob Ancestry) which I must have put in the recycle bin by "mistook"  ;D as it's not on my comp ::)

What I have is;

Glenmasson Conaresk Farm, Kilmun, Dunoon & Kilmun, Argyll...... (It's not on google)  ???

The names on the census which I have noted 1861 next to are;

Jane McColl or Steele (not sure how it was written down) but variants of both names
Flora (mother) was either down as Steele or MacIsaac (variants for both names)

Jane was born 1827 South Uist, Inverness
Flora was born c1801 Canna, Argyll

There may be Jane's husband Duncan McColl (Shepherd) b 1819 Kilchrenan & Dalavich, Argyll & 2 kids Donald c1850 & Margaret c1856

I would like to locate this place but can find nothing on the net, so I'm wondering if I've written it down properly  ???

Any help would be much appreciated.

Thanks Eck,

That's the very one  ;D

I had a note to check it (must have been interrupted at the time) & had deleted it  ::)

Strange Jane is using her mother's maiden name yet hubby is at home  ???

I have googled that place & came up with "0"  :o

Annie

ADDED...............have to laugh at the transcription of names especially MacIsaac  ;D

Hello Annie,
Jean's surname should be Steel without the 'e' on the end. (Sorry, my mistake)
You must have found a different transcription from the A*try one I posted. Because of the difference in Flora's surname between the two, I had a little nosey on SP.
1861 Census. One match for Jean Steel age 30 in Kilmun, Argyll.
No matches for Duncan McCall but there is one match for Duncan McColl age 42.
No matches for Flora McKeesie or MacIsaac but there is one match for Flora McKesic age 55 in Kilmun. (Wonder which one, if any, is right!)
Putting a name in the 'Second Person Forename' Box only works if the surnames are the same, so can't tell if they are in the same household or not.
               Regards,     Dod.

Eck,

The Anc one you found is the one I found.

As soon as I saw it I remembered exactly about Jane's mum Flora's surname.......her actual name was MacIsaac but the transcription is a bit out.

I couldn't remember all the details as I couldn't find the copy I saved.

I just had a look at my tree & I also have a note for 1871 to check, (they details were on the same doc. I have deleted)

I just checked freecen & only 1 entry for a Duncan McColl but he's with a different wife (Margaret) & I can't remember what was on the Anc one now as I haven't written anything in the notes apart from to check 1871 so I'm not sure if Anc has Jane with him or not.

The only thing I have written is 1871 Glenmasson Cardie House, Dunoon but the freecen had something different, no mention of the Glenmasson................it says Bute so it can't be the right one  ??? or if it is....he is remarried  :o

Thanks Eck,

That's the correct one which isn't on freecen.

I thought the freecen one wasn't right but I recognise this one.

Still can't find the place although I found one which is a holiday home which might be it but hard to say as it has changed name if it is.

Will check it out again later.

Seems to have been a large house though.

Hello Annie,
Found a place named Corarsik by the River Masson in Kilmun district. If you follow the river northwards it takes you through Glen Masson and eventually to buildings named Glenmassan. (I assume both Corarsik & Glenmassan are farms) Could Corarsik & Conaresk be the same place?
Corarsik shown on this OS 6inch, 1888-1913 Map.
          http://maps.nls.uk/geo/explore/#zoom=16&lat=56.0226&lon=-4.9999&layers=6

Just a bit further south/south east is Cairdie House. (1888-1913 Map) Named Tiahnacardich on OS 6inch, 1843-1882 Map.
          http://maps.nls.uk/geo/explore/#zoom=16&lat=56.0060&lon=-4.9820&layers=6

National Library of Scotland (nls) Maps are excellent. On the left of the screen in '1. Select a category' box, choose Scotland from the drop down menu. '2. Select a map/map series' box gives a selection of maps, but the OS 6inch, 183-1882 & 1888-1913 Maps have the most detail. Better still is the OS 25inch, 1892-1905 Map, however, it doesn't cover all areas of Scotland.
Slide the Blue Dot on the left of screen for an up-to-date satellite overview or click on the blue Side by Side at the top of the screen to make comparing then and now easier.
     Good luck with your search.
               Regards,     Dod.

As a by and by, one of my main lines, in Moidart Argyll was MacIsaac. Family morphed into MacDonald through the mid to late 1800s... BMD certs written up as 'MacIsaac or MacDonald', then just became MacDonald. Took me a while to figure out.

May help Annie for you with searches through this period too.
