Leonard Kennedy of Stapleton Cumberland
« on: Tuesday 15 September 15 16:20 BST (UK) »
I am trying to find the parents of Leonard Kennedy baptised 4.3.1759 and married Jane Little on 3.2. 1782 at Stapleton. I have a possible Thomas as father for Leonard and an Archibald as father for Jane has anyone done any research on this family. He is my 4x Great Grandfather.

Thanks - Special K

I think the parents may have been Jane (Potts) and Thomas - Did Leonard die in the early 1840s?
Threlfall (Southport), Isherwood (lancs & Canada), Newbould + Topliss(Derby), Keating & Cummins (Ireland + lancs), Fisher, Strong& Casson (all Cumberland) & Downie & Bowie, Linlithgow area Scotland . Also interested in Leigh& Burrows,(Lancashire) Griffiths (Shropshire & lancs), Leaver (Lancs/Yorks) & Anderson(Cumberland and very elusive)

From the marriage register, her parents or siblings may have been (witnesses at the marriage) John Little and Mary Little.

Were the parents, or at least father, not named on the baptismal record?

Yes he died 10.7. 1844 at Barns, Walton. He was living with his daughter in law Jane Kennedy nee Dodgson and Thomas her son. Just seen your second post interesting about the witnesses to the marriage. Did Thomas and Jane have any other issue that you know of?
Thank you

Hi
there is a newspaper report in the Carlisle Patriot of 1838, about the removal of a pauper, William Kennedy, which you might find useful.
amongst all the evidence listed a Leonard Kennedy said:

Leonard Kennedy – I am 80 years old and better. Simon Kennedy was my uncle. My father’s Christian name was Tom. I was brought up at the High Moss Thorn, which was kept by old John Kennedy, my grandfather. Simon lived there with his father till he was nearly 20 years old. He married Jenny Forster when he was about 25; and they had in their family a son named John. John had afterwards a family; his son William is the pauper in this case.

Is this your Leonard? Possibly the one buried at Stapleton in 1844 aged 86, of Walton. If so, he confirms his father was Tom Kennedy, grandfather John Kennedy and uncle Simon Kennedy.

Looks as though his baptism might be in Bewcastle in 1759? You'll have to check the parish register to see if there are any other clues to confirm his family
best wishes
