I have just seen your post about the McDonnells.  I have the original marriage certificate for Walter McDonnell and Harriett Rosina Sparkes.  Their son, Walter Arthur was my granddad.  I was told that Harriett died in childbirth but assume this must have been a third child as my granddad was born in July 1902 and I believe she died a few years after this.  I was told an "aunt brought him up, but have been unable to find out who this was or whether this was with Lillian, his sister also.  I do have a picture of a lady who could be Harriet or the "aunt.

If your Walter was born 1902 he was nearly 6 when his mother died in 1908. He stays with his father and Lillian for at least a three more years, his father does not die until 1947.

1891 census shows his mother Hariett Rosina had a brother Walter and a sister Henrietta, these would have been your Walters aunt and uncles on his maternal side. Henrietta married in 1899 to a Thomas James Johnson and seems to have had one daughter Rose Alice  c.1899.

His uncle Walter also married an Elizabeth Clara Hollowell in 1895 and had 5 children.

Youngest brother of Harriett Rosina Henry Edward married in 1915 to Alice Lucy Cable and looks to have had five children.

If he was bought up by this side of the family it might help if you knew which area your Walter grew up in.

He always remained in  Rotherhithe/Bermondsey until just after his marriage.  He only ever mentioned an "aunt" who was a "real lady and you did as you were told".  Never any mention of being in a family or of his sister.   In fact, he would not be drawn on any memories or tales from his childhood or youth.  I did wonder if he was taken in by a charitable institution.   There was certainly one quite nearby.

At least three generations of Walter McDonnells (four if you count Lillian and Henry's son)!

So, our respective great-grandfathers were brothers - I am beginning to piece things together.  I don't have any information pre the marriage certificate but you mention an Irish connection.  I assumed there might be but only because of the name.  Have you got anywhere with that?
