Devon Baptisms 1620 - HERSEY
« on: Tuesday 15 September 15 22:52 BST (UK) »
I'm hoping to find the parents of Stephen Hersey baptized in 1620 in Tiverton, St Peter, Devon, England.  I'm seeking to determine if he could be identifiable with Stephen Horsey who immigrated to Virginia in 1643 and who was born around 1620.  There are numerous Horseys in the Tiverton area during this era, but I cannot determine his lineage from what I'm finding on the Internet.

Hi
There's a Stephen Hersey s of Stephen Hersey baptised at Tiverton 15.5.1620.
Brother Christopher Horsey baptised s of Steven 1.1.1627,sister Elizabeth 28.9.1630,Thomas bapt 23.9.1633  buried 25.9.1633,William bapt.29.11.1634.
Christopher buried 5.4.1671.Admin for him 1678 at Exeter His son John baptised 28.7.1649.
Amy wife of Stephen Horssey buried 17.11.1644.
Burial for Stephen 13.12.1644 but that's a bit difficult to read and it looks like Horsei.

There is also a marriage for Stephen Senior  10.4.1619 to a Marie Huggins at Tiverton so where does  Amy come in?

I can't find any burials for a previous generation.
There's also no death/burial for Stephen junior so it's looking right.

Most Devon wills were destroyed by bombing but you might get lucky. The 1642 Protestation might also help.

ciderdrinker,
Thank you so much!  I think you have solved a long standing mystery.  The patriarch of the Horsey family in Maryland (from which I descend) was Stephen Horsey born c.1620, but I had never been able to find the connection back to the famous Horsey family of Clifton Maybank.  You have finally given me a solid starting point.  I suspect that the elder Stephen Horsey, who would probably have been born in the 1590s, was descended from Jasper (c.1505-1546) and Joanna (Wilford) Horsey (c.1508-1557) of Exeter.  They had ten sons, six of which were under the age of 21 when Joanna wrote her will in 1553.  If her children were born 1525-1540s, then Stephen the elder is probably her great-great-grandson.  Her children were: 1) Capt. Edward Horsey of the Isle of Wight (1525-1583) (whose history is well documented), 2) George Horsey, MP (1526-1588) (whose son, Sir Ralph Horsey, inherited Clifton Maybank - his lineage is known), 3) Christopher, 4) Francis, 5) Thomas (d.1573) (who married Dorothy Carent),  6) Gervase, 7) Phillip, 8 ) John, 9) William, and 10) Jasper (who married the daughter of John St. Leger).  At least I can narrow my search down to Devon and go from there.  Thanks again.

I noticed a William Horse was buried at Tiverton, St. Peter, Devon in 1566.  I wonder if this could be the son of Jasper and Joanna Horsey.  I do know that one of William Horsey's sons was Sir Jerome Horsey, ambassador to Czar Ivan the Terrible.
