John Herbert

I would like to check the birth date and parents of john Herbert. He married Margaret Poynter on the 20 th of February 1792 at Stanford in the Vale Berkshire. I have 2 birth dates and sets of parents.
Born 14-12-1768 at Wantage Berkshire, father John Herbert mother Ann Banting.Or,
Baptised 5-9-1765 at St Marys Whitechapel Middlesex, father Walter Herbert mother Elizabeth ?.
Can anyone help me sort this out.

Have you any reason to think he came from London? What was the family's occupation?

Did either of the possible fathers leave a Will? If so was their son John mentioned along with any more info that would make it clear if it was your John or not?  Did either of these possible parents have other children? If so, does following them bring up any link with your John, or any info that can rule that one out?
Who were the witnesses when he married? Can they be followed?

Sometimes it isnt easy to "prove" or "disprove" this sort of thing. It is a case of researching all angles, until something can be ruled out. If a possible cannot be ruled out, then it remains a possibility, and eventually if a lot of circumstantial evidence points to it, you have to make a choice whether to accept it as the most likely and move on, or not.

The John Herbert born 1768, Wantage, married Lydia Seaward at Wargrave in 1791, he is on the 1841/51 census in Wantage.

I note that John & Margaret had a large number of children born in Childrey, the first of which was William. (He was born 1792 and died the following year, a later son was called William also)

There is a transcription on FindMyPast which reads John Harber baptised  6 Mar 1768 St Mary, Wargrave, Berkshire Son of William & Ann. This may be a transcription error, you would need to see original.

As his age would be rounded up in 1841 this may be him below, he was on his own
