Rhymney burial - Edward W Rees - 1905
« on: Wednesday 16 September 15 22:29 BST (UK) »
I know from IGI that Edward William Rees was buried in Rhymney on 29 June 1905.  He had lived in Bedlinog for many years before his death.

Can any kind person help me with the next step of finding his grave?

Many thanks.

His death was registered in the Merthyr Tydfil RD which was Glamorgan.

However - Rhymney came under Monmouthshire in 1905

I can't see an IGI entry which shows a burial in Rhymney.

It seems strange that he died in Glamorgan but was buried in Monmouthshire although it's only about 7 miles between Merthyr and Rhymney

This is the IGI entry for an Edward William Rees being buried on 29 June 1905 in Rhymney.

https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:KCYM-7L1

I know this is some way from where he lived but I feel this must be my ancestor.

His date of birth was 1825 and he died on 26 June 1905 (at his home in Bedlinog).  So his age and the date of burial fit.

Any comments or advice gratefully received!

Hi Fisherj, If he died as you say and this is confirmed by the Burial entry in Bedlinog, it is only 5 miles from Bedlinog to Rhymney, this often happens when the person is either from the village, or was Married or Baptised there.
The Burial entry, 29 June 1905, Edward William Rees, 11 Lower High Street Bedlinog, aged 80 years.
Merthyr Tydfil is the Registration District, it is divided in to Upper which is Merthyr Tyfil and possibly an area of about 5 miles, and Merthyr Tydfil Lower which extends down as far as Ystrad Mynach, and includes the Gelligaer Urban District, which now comes under the Caerphilly District Council.
Best wishes Rowley

Thanks Rowley and Carol for your replies - just to explain how this fits together...

Edward W Rees was born in Llangurig, Montgomeryshire.

He lived in 3 Carno St Bedwellty Monmouthshire before he and his  family moved to Bedlinog.

I don't know which was the closest parish church to Bedlinog during his time.

I know there is St Davids church in Wales  in Rhymney.   And another anglican church in Gelligaer.

His father, grandfather, great grandfather were all parish clerks and buried in the parish church in Llangurig.  So I am now wondering whether the reason he was buried in Rhymney was because he too was "Church in Wales", not non-conformist.

And if that was the case, I wonder how he would get to Rhymney in the next valley to Bedlinog go to church.

I'd be interested in any thoughts....

Kind regards

Thanks Rootchatters for your help.  I now know that Edward William Rees was buried at St Davids Church Rhymney on 29 June 1905.

I don't know when his wife Eleanor Rees died or where she was buried.  She was born in Llansantffraid parish, Cardiganshire in 1836/7 and was still alive at the time of the 1901 Census living with him in Bedlinog.

Being optimistic, I went to St David's Church today hoping to find a headstone with at least Edward's details and maybe that of Eleanor too.  However the graveyard is overgrown and many of the grave stones are in poor condition so I was unsuccessful.

I'd be very grateful if some kind person can advise me whether a plan of the graveyard exists and particularly information on the inscriptions.   I enquired at the church and they do not have a plan.

Many thanks
