Pomeroy
« on: Sunday 20 September 15 17:50 BST (UK) »
I have traced my paternal line back to my great great grandfather,Charles Pomeroy DOB 1831, London.   He was widowed and remarried.  On his first marriage certificate his father's name is given as John and on his second as William.  I cannot find any reference to his birth.  Any ideas?

Hi,

Welcome to RootsChat,

1841 census -

William Pomery   45 Carpenter
Frances Pomery   45
Elizabeth Pomery   20
John Pomery   15
Charles Pomery   10 born in county

Phoenix Street, St Pancras

The above name of William corresponds to one of the marriage certs and equally the occupation of Charles' father is recorded as a carpenter on both certs.

John Pomery   15
Charles Pomery   10 born in county

John can be traced to his 1849 marriage to Susan Daniels in St Pancras (his father William, a carpenter).  John was a constable when he married, as was Charles on his first marriage.

In 1861 John and Susan are in Newington, Surrey.  He is a police constable, 38 b Devonport, Devon.

Likely baptism for John is as John Carasco Pomeray, 18 Sep 1825 at Stoke Damerel.  Parents are William (house carpenter) and Frances Matilda.

Unfortunately I cannot easily see a baptism for Charles to establish that William and Frances were his parents.  As you probably know he was born too early for a birth registration (civil registration came in with effect from 1 July 1837).
